Publisher's summary

Hyphened-Nation was inspired by the author's travels overseas and time spent living in the United Kingdom. Living abroad was an eye-opening experience; she grew to understand certain aspects of American culture better, the longer she lived overseas. This book is about her insights and experience of being treated as an American, rather than a hyphenated one.

The difference was startling and lead her on a journey to understand why the United States is one of the only, if not the only country, that hyphenates its citizens by ethnicity before nationality. It is a journey of discovery in understanding that those same boxes we allow ourselves to be placed into as hyphenated-Americans limit economic, educational, societal, and cultural growth.

Her story focuses on ways the United States and our global community differ culturally and steps citizens can take to create a nonhyphenated coalitional nation.

Intense, Illuminating, Inspiring!!!

This is a MUST READ for not just every American but for inquisitive minds asking the question of what it really means to be BE an American. As a millennial myself, I was wholeheartedly agreeing with the philosophy of the book. My eyes were opened to the some of the ugly realities that the U.S. tends to sweep under the rug. For such a quick read, Hyphened-Nation was packed with historical and current evidence, and I feel so much more informed about our country’s history and how we even got to this point. Draffen’s hard-hitting statements and clever commentary kept me hooked and it’s definitely something I’ll be recommending to my friends and family. Warning: if you don’t like the TRUTH, don’t read it. It’s a tough but necessary read! Definitely going to be quoting a lot of what Draffen said in the future.

Good one

Being an second generation immigrant to the US, this book was an fascinating listen for me. The book helped me understand more about the US then I learned all my life living in the US. This book opened me to understand what it truly means to be an American. The authors journey to the UK made her realize why Americans act in the way they do.

Nicole Draffen is good at weaving words to explain her point of view, and Torii Alaniz also narrates the book fluently throughout.

I found this book very interesting!

Having traveled to Africa, Egypt, Germany and Japan... I have similar experiences as her experience in London. The issues in the book has mirrored many of my own. I would like to see her write something else. I would definitely read it.
