The Principles of Hygge

This was my first experience with "Hygge”, the Danish philosophy/method of how to arrange your living space. This audiobook provides a good overview of the concept.

Hygge is about creating a living space that is peaceful, cozy and inviting. It requires that our homes not be cluttered or stressful. That our possessions have purpose, or else gotten rid of. There is an emphasis on light-especially, natural light-and the flow of space.

This brief audiobook is well-organized and well-written. The narrator delivered the content in an interesting and engaging manner. It is worth checking out.

I was provided this audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator in exchange for an unbiased review.

An interesting concept

I was given this free review copy audio book at my request and have voluntarily left this review.

So, I'll start off by saying, this is my first introduction into "Hygge" and I had absolutely no idea what to expect going in. As the title suggests, this seemed like a simple overview of this concept of this Danish minimilist living concept. I think it offered an interesting take on decluttering and organizing a home to be "cozy and relaxing." The book hints at there being more in-depth thought on this concept, so I would only recommend this for people, like myself, that have had no exposure to the concept. The narrator does a decent job of trying to make the content interesting. I am intrigued enough to want to dig a little deeper, but not completely convinced that my life has been changed after this book.

Quick intro to Hygge

If you want a simple, quick intro to Hygge before deciding to delve further, this could be the book for you.

In my opinion, it's not just like all the minimalism books and not like Marie Kondo as another reviewer suggested. Nielsen's book puts a lot of importance on creating coziness at home. If you've seen minimalist home photos and found their decorating style a bit cold and uninviting and, well, too minimal, or thought Kondo was too rigid, then you should probably look into hygge. With hygge you can still declutter and have a neat home but in a cozier, more relaxed, and inviting way.

I had previously read a longer book about Hygge by a Danish author, which provided a more complex and culturally Danish perspective on what hygge is and I found that interesting. However, Nielsen's book does share an overview on how you can create hygge at home and does so in a short format and the narrator has an American accent (unlike the Danish book) and that will be more desirable for some readers. There are elements of Nielsen's book that I can use in my home.

The narrator has a good clear pronunciation and American accent but the enthusiastic delivery felt a bit over-much to me.

Good

Some very good concepts if a little simplistic at times. Good information on how to look at your surroundings and unclutter your life. The Narrator did a very good job of keeping you engaged. I received a free copy of this book in return for an unbiased review.

Simplistic Explanations

Matyas J was a good narrator for this self development book.

The content, however was the usual book about minimizing clutter and macimizing space presented in dozens or hundreds of other books. No new ideas nor assistance with determining value or use of items.

It seems to be more of an introduction than an actual how-to.

Nothing new under the sun

Since I've already listened to many audiobooks on the same or similar topics, my opinion might be biased or I just grew tired of it altogether. I honestly couldn't find the difference between minimalism, hygge, lagom, and Marie Kondo's books. This audiobook goes by the same principles as the others I mentioned. My advice: read the book's blurbs, check the ratings, and take your pick.

It was ok

It was my first audiobook on hygge, but I've listened to others on simple living themes. I'm not overly impressed or disappointed with the book. Provided an overview on hygge and some things to consider.
