Publisher's Summary

For more than half a century, Special Forces and CIA legend Billy Waugh dedicated his life to tracking down and eliminating America's most virulent enemies. Operating from the darkest shadows and most desolate corners of the world, he made his mark in many of the most important operations in the annals of US Spec Ops. He spent seven and a half years behind enemy lines in Vietnam as a member of a covert group of elite commandos. He trailed Osama Bin Laden in Khartoum in the early '90s and would have killed the terrorist kingpin if his superiors had allowed it. And at the age of 72, he marched through the frozen high plains of Afghanistan as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. Hunting the Jackal is the astonishing true account of the singular career of a courageous soldier in his nation's shadow wars - including his pivotal role in the previously untold story of the capture of the most infamous and elusive assassin in history, Carlos the Jackal.

Hunting the Jackal - epic accounting of SOF/SOG and CIA IV

Billy Waugh is one of those hard men who do that which only they can do in order that we can sleep safely in our beds at night. The man is an authentic American Hero, who nonetheless blushes at that title.

Billy Waugh’s accounting amounts to an amazing depiction of what actually occurred in US Army SOF/SOG and the CIA, from the Korean War thru Vietnam thru hunting Carlos the Jackal thru the defeat of the Taliban during Enduring Freedom. Well worth reading twice !!!

MUST READ if you like books on special forces

I have read countless books on military operations and covert action. This book has become one of my absolute favorites. The storied 50 year career of Billy Waugh is almost unbelievable! This man is legendary among the special operations community. The narration is great and I listened to the book nearly straight through!

Outstanding Book!

First off, Joe Barrett (the narrator) did a terrific job! Perfect man for the job.
This book gives an insight into Billy Waugh’s life and career with an emphasis on his tracking of Bin Laden and Carlos the Jackal. Excellent book! A must read for anyone interested in military history, Special Forces, and / or the global war on terrorism.

A TESTAMENT TO THE BRAVE MEN OF SOG/SOF

this is an absolutely amazing book. Having spent several years in force Recon myself, I know enough to say that this book Rings true. The language is perfect, and the narrator captures the feel of that life flawlessly.

Billy Waugh and his fellow SOG operators conducted exploits that Boggle my mind. these guys were Fearless, and absolutely heroic, although they would never admit it. they conducted cross-border operations into Cambodia alone and unafraid. they were also by today's standards unequipped. those were the days before smart bombs, GPS, and Advanced Communications. these guys survived literally by their wits, guts and determination - combined with physical stamina and willingness to endure deprivation.

the title of the book is misleading, and I think under sells the book, for this tale involves much more then Billy Waughs work against Carlos the jackal. it spans a 50-year career in Special Ops. It was one of those books I was truly sad to have finished

Good job Billy

Very interesting book. Loved the insight into the modern OBL stuff but Vietnam and the jackal were really the meat of the story. Poignant and funny. Narrator was great but some bad stitching in editing.

The man

This book was very informative and shows that some men are just badass. Billy should have been able to get the highest position in the special forces to lead men of he’s type a must read highly recommended.
