A Wall Street Journal Top 10 national best seller

Number one Kindle best seller in "Mysteries & Thrillers"

Who is hunter?

Who is prey?

Who will survive?

Award-winning true-crime author Robert Bidinotto makes his stunning fiction debut with a best-selling thriller that has earned more than 200 "5-star" rave reviews from readers.

Two people, passionately in love.

But each hides a deadly secret.

He is a crusading vigilante, on a violent quest for justice.

She is tracking this unknown assassin, sworn to stop him.

Neither realizes the truth about the other.

And neither knows that a terrifying predator is hunting them both....

From its first moments, Hunter takes you on a nonstop thrill ride: from the top floor of the CIA, to the marbled corridors of Capitol Hill...from the posh hotels of downtown Washington, to the city's mean, violent streets. It introduces a colorful new hero for our time - and a dazzling heroine every bit his equal.

A spy mystery...a crime thriller...a passionate romance: Hunter is a genre-bending novel unlike any you've read. Deviously plotted, filled with vivid characters, and propelled at a breakneck pace, it's a tale as memorable for its provocative ideas as for a rousing climax that has readers cheering.

If you enjoy the thrillers of Lee Child, Stephen Hunter, Brad Thor, and Vince Flynn, you'll love Hunter.

Critic reviews

"One of the best vigilante thrillers since Clancy's Without Remorse.... Hunter delivers in a way few thrillers do. From the opening kill shot to the climactic showdown, Hunter strikes home with the power and pinpoint accuracy of a Barrett M99....A fantastic debut thriller....A solid five stars." (Stephen England, author, Pandora's Grave)
"A joy...one of the great romances....To say that Hunter is a well-structured novel is an understatement....Even the lesser characters are vividly realized [and] memorably etched with a few deft strokes. Bidinotto seems incapable of creating a cardboard figure....I demand a sequel....I want to return to the exhilarating moral atmosphere of Bidinotto's story." (Roger Donway, The Atlasphere)
"This book has all the elements of an exciting thriller--strong conflicts, romance, action, and characters you care about. I especially loved the concluding paragraph, and you will too. Buy it." (Larry Abrams, author, The Philosophical Practitioner)

Best Vigilante Story since Without Remorse

Any additional comments?

The story opens with a joint CIA and FBI operation that targets the capture of a rogue CIA agent trying to flee the United States.after one of the main characters, Annie Woods, discovered his nafarious activities. After an event that I will not spoil for you, Annie finds herself working directly with a highly placed individual with the Central Intelligence Agency, looking for an elusive sniper.

Meanwhile, Annie will cross paths with the other central character of this book, freelancer journalist Dylan Lee Hunter as they both come to support a dear friend in her moment of need and weakness. Dylan and Annie start to meet and fall in love in no time, but, little did they know that their relationship will get very complicated as each of them will fight with their fears and with dangerous secrets.

Dylan’s investigative reporting targets the US judicial system, pointing harsh accusing fingers at the criminals that are released from prison without serving their time and to those that don’t even get arrested as the charges are dropped by multiple prosecuting atterneys as a consequence to the flawed legal system in the U.S. He writes with passion, describing their crimes in gory details and asks that someone will do something to get these scumbags of the streets for the sake of the victims and to prevent them from harming others.

Somebody takes note of Hunter’s articles and gets to work, bodies start piling up all over Washington with each inflammatory expose that Dylan writes and the Police forms a taskforce to find The Vigilante Killers, although they are really grateful that someone is taking out the good for nothing criminals and sexual predators. Here I’ll stop talking about the story and I’ll let you discover the rest on your own, adding just that it’s a great one, filled with tense moments, interesting facts, ideas and the right amount of romance. Oh, yeah, and the ending is very satisfying as well.

After finishing Hunter: A Thriller I found myself thinking about the following four lifelike characters: Dylan Lee Hunter, a man with a troubled past, Annie Woods and her secrets, Detective Cronin, one of the good guys who felt to me like an old friendly ”Sherlock” from some great mystery story, and the cat, Luna, was just one of those masterful touches that made the book even better. I hope to reconnect with all of them in the next book, which I’ll start to listen to, hopefully, sometime next week.

Another thing I liked very much in Hunter is the ever evolving love story that takes place between Dylan and Annie. I think that Robert nailed the perfect balance and knew where to start and where to stop. Besides being a great thriller, Hunter brings together aspects from romance, mystery, police procedurals and espionage. Well done sir!

Robert Bidinotto writes thrillers like a pro! The vibe that Hunter left me with was thought provoking and I was very pleasantly surprised by this fresh take on the vigilante idea. I haven’t read something this good on this topic since Without Remorse by Tom Clancy, which, by the way, is one of my all time favorites.

Conor Hall gives an almost perfect performance with the audiobook, bringing all the characters to life, even Luna the cat. His narration becomes mesmerizing at times and the different voices and subtle accents keeps everyone differentiated in the listeners mind. I think he is the right actor to record this new amazing series of thrillers and I’m looking forward to listen to him again.

So, as a conclusion, Hunter: A Thriller is a great book with a very compelling story, filled with characters that feel alive and real. Robert Bidinotto delivers one of the most interesting and thought provoking thrillers released in recent history. His experience as an investigative journalist makes large parts of Hunter feel like a non fiction work, but the acts of vengeance perpetrated by the Vigilante Killers are to good to be a true fact :).

Robert is a great writer and I’m honored to have been asked to write a review for such a special book and with this occasion I want to thank him for the opportunity. Really glad to discover his works and from now on I’ll keep an eye out for any new release.

Espionage novel? Vigilante novel? Romance novel?

The answer is YES to all three questions. Hunter is also a crime novel. It is a great thriller!. In his dotage famous long time crime journalist Robert Bidinatto has started writing great novels. It is ironic but unsurprising that his first, Hunter, is so difficult to classify. If you like espionage thrillers, you will like Hunter.

I first read the Kindle version of Hunter in 2011 shortly after release and before the audiobook release over one year later. A recent review of Bad Deeds by an Audible listener reminded me of the book so I ordered the Audible version. I look forward to listening to Bad Deeds which is Book 2 in the Hunter series.

Dylan Hunter is a journalist and secret vigilante who punishes those that the justice system does not. He was also a top CIA field agent under another name earlier in his life. He falls in love with a woman before he realizes she is a current CIA agent who is assigned to catching the secret vigilante.

At Amazon 614 people have rated Hunter and the average rating is 4.5 stars. The average Audible rating is 3.8 stars. Hunter is much, much better than 3.8 stars. I cannot understand the low ratings of this novel here at Audible.

Excellent crime thriller

Hunter's new life started about two years ago, before that his complex and complicated history is unwound beautifully throughout this book. This was a very good crime thriller that had depth, a good story and an interesting, (non sappy or sexually over explicit), romance. I became attached to the characters and felt empathy, through mixed feelings for the main protagonist. When does a bad deed make for a good outcome in the balance of good and evil?
Conor Hall did a good job with quite a few different voices including the women. I am looking forward to reading the next in the series. If it's anything like this one I will be looking forward to more from Robert Bidinotto.

Exciting Thriller

This is a compelling and somewhat disturbing story of vigilantism, murder, flawed legal system, naivety and love. The story highlights the gaps and faults in the criminal justice system and shows how well meaning, naive people can sometimes be misled into provide support in the wrong places. It has a good mix of mystery, intrigue, suspense and romance. The characters were appealing and I particularly liked how the development of the romance between the protagonists caused their characters to grow and change. The plot has numerous twists and enough complexity to keep you entertained but not confused. Though it is a work of fiction, the authors background shines through in this novel, it is well written, thought provoking and very enjoyable. The narration fit the book well and he managed to do both male and female voices convincingly. I received this audiobook from the author at no cost in exchange for an honest review

Sorry - Just Can't Finish This Book

I tried really hard - honest, I did. The story line is both obvious (a cardinal sin in the 'thriller' genre) and unbelievable. The narration is corny and over-done - the characters lack-lustre. One thing I insist upon is that I have some buy in about the fate of the characters. I found myself not caring what happened to them one way or the other. Normally I am fairly tolerant. I respect the writing craft and believe its not easy to write an interesting story that has wide spread appeal. But these characters are just not real. How can a vigilante (whose obsession is to punish evil-doers of crime, including perpetrators of sexual violence) turn to his girlfriend and say that, in bed, the only word he forbids is 'No'. Purrrrlease. Makes me want to have a crack at a novel myself... I'm sure I could improve on this. Aaarrrgh! I will confess that I'm not feeling well at the moment and a tad cranky. But that's just when I want a book to distract me. Not working. Next...

A great philosophical action romance...

What made the experience of listening to Hunter the most enjoyable?

Robert Bidinotto's "Hunter: A Thriller" is expertly crafted; integrating conflict, drama, and philosophy in a captivating story. The authors extensive background in criminal justice journalism adds intense realism and authenticity to the story. This story embodies the best of good story telling as one of an incredibly rare breed of philosophical action romances that idealizes positive rational themes. As one of these and Hunter stands, to use a metaphor from Robert's story, at Olympian heights. Thank you Robert for crafting such an excellent story, I eagerly await more Dylan Hunter stories.

Which character – as performed by Conor Hall – was your favorite?

Conor does a great job in the Audio rendition of this book, seamlessly transitioning from one characther to another and reading with sincerity and enthusiasm.

An extra-judicial Javert

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is an enabler.”

Taking in the story of Hunter it occurred to me that it is, perhaps by design, an almost perfect inversion of Victor Hugo’s Les Miserables. Where Hugo exposes a bygone criminal justice system that victimized the “guilty”, all out of proportion to their crimes, Bidinotto exposes a contemporary system that actually enables fearsome criminals, and has become part of the violent crime problem in a different way.

Bidinotto is famous (or infamous, depending on your perspective) for exposing the Willie Horton case that defined the failed Presidential candidacy of Michael Dukakis in 1988. Here he is, decades later, distilling the same outrage into an effective work of fiction, his first. He’s a long time admirer (devotee?) of Ayn Rand, and the influence shows, a particular scene late in the book evokes the hijacked radio address at the climax of Atlas Shrugged, though Bidinotto’s version is blessedly shorter. Above all the influence shows in the clarity of the prose, and the fact that while Hunter has the elements of a thriller, it’s ultimately a morality tale.

The narrator does a fine job, though I have a minor quibble. For most of the book, there’s little question who “the killer” is. This isn’t an Agatha Christie mystery, building to a big reveal at the end. However, early on, the grammar used to refer to the killer is strictly pronouns, I believe the author doesn’t want you to have ID’d which character it is, yet. The narrator, however, uses the same distinct timbre he used for the killer for another major character, so even if Bidinotto had employed all of Agatha Christie’s gifts for misdirection, you’d have to know who it is. It's certainly a characterful narration however, all the way down to the stubborn feline.

An excellent vigilante crime novel

I REALLY liked this book. This is the first book in a series about a vigilante and victim's rights activist, Dylan Hunter. I cannot wait to start the next book. It has action, suspense, thrills, and even some romance. I listened to the audio book and I really enjoyed the narrator, Connor Hall. He gave such different voices to all the characters, and his female voices did not sound forced (which is something I really appreciate since many narrators doing opposite genders just don't sound right and can grate on the nerves). If I had to knock one thing on the narration, it is that the volume of the different voices was sometimes very different. I found that I would turn up the volume to hear a particular voice, then feel like I was hurting my hearing because the next character would speak particularly loudly. This may be a problem with my hearing, as I find it hard to hear really low voices sometimes, and not necessarily a problem that others would experience while listening. That being said, I really was blown away by the range of the narrator, and look forward to listening to more books narrated by him. If you like stories about vigilantes, check this one out. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Rather predictable thriller

I'm glad I bought this book on Audible and didn't pay retail for the CD version. The story is predictable and the narration is tenuous. Still the book deals with a pertainent subject and the Author is well informed. Overall a B-.
