"Come for the crackling queer banter, stay for the history of magic (steeped in shrewd social consciousness).”—Ryan Douglass, New York Times bestselling author of The Taking of Jake Livingston

"The perfect witchy read" —BuzzFeed

Magically brilliant, academically perfect, chronically overcommitted—

Shay Johnson has all the makings of a successful witch. As a junior at T.K. Anderson Magical Magnet School, she’s determined to win the Brockton Scholarship—her ticket into the university of her dreams. Her competition? Ana freaking Álvarez. The key to victory? Impressing Mr. B, drama teacher and head of the scholarship committee.

When Mr. B asks Shay to star in this year’s aggressively inclusive musical, she warily agrees, even though she’ll have to put up with Ana playing the other lead. But in rehearsals, Shay realizes Ana is . . . not the despicable witch she’d thought. Perhaps she could be a friend—or more. And Shay could use someone in her corner once she becomes the target of Mr. B’s unwanted attention. When Shay learns she’s not the first witch to experience his inappropriate behavior, she must decide if she’ll come forward. But how can she speak out when her future's on the line?

From the plot to the romance to the magic to the person narrating. Just a good read. I’m ready for book 2.

Oh man I am so pleased.

Really loved this one overall. There were a few times I was yelling at the book due to Shay constantly ignoring warning signs and being a typical teen. I loved the way Shay and Ana's relationship evolved throughout the story.

I think my only disappointment was the ending. I wanted more from it. What happens with Shay and Ana after high school, does Mr. B have repercussions, does this have any lasting impact, etc. It kind of just ends and I really wanted more to it.

Overall, really enjoyed this and want to read more by this author.

Really enjoyed this book

Compelling story; I wish the ending was a bit more fleshed out but overall a good read if you can stick with the terrible robotic narration.

I stuck with the story but the narrator is just awful

I really liked this book. I’ll be encouraging my daughter to read it. It spoke to real life situations in a fantasy world.

Definitely wasn’t what I was expecting

This book was very very good! The way that sexual assault and manipulation are talked about is flawless in my opinion. Aislinn Brophy did an amazing job at capturing a love story between two girls, what sexual abuse/sexual coercion can look like, and the high standards young adults are held to when trying to decide/plan their future (specifically brown and black young adults).

The best YA book I’ve listened to
