Publisher's Summary

Former Top Gear Stig Ben Collins shares expert skills and wisdom refined over a 20-year career as one of the best drivers in the world - from Le Mans Series racing to NASCAR, piloting the Batmobile and dodging bullets with James Bond.

Ben's philosophy of anticipation, smoothness and speed, honed over thousands of hours of elite-level performance, is really about economy of motion - which also gives you greater control, safety and fuel efficiency. How to Drive is about driving better, not faster.

Whether you've been behind the wheel for the best part of 30 years or you bought your first L-plate 10 seconds ago, this is the stuff your instructor missed, your dad forgot and your mates pretend to know...but don't.

How to master driving, taught by a master

Ben Collins approaches driving cars for every day users from a passionate yet scientific perspective. He covers all the basics, from braking, cornering and accelerating, to the most advanced stunt techniques. Through all the book a sense of control and sensibility is transmitted for regular drivers; and at the same time stories are colorful and fun to listen. Ben's british accent and clear voice is also a plus.

As much fun as a speed awareness coarse

Ever been on a speed awareness coarse in place of 3-points - well this is about as much fun as that afternoon you spent being preached to! Ben sounds at times like he is reading the words for the first time (which i suspect maybe true) & only really comes-to-life when reciting some stories that are the only entertaining part of this book. There is honestly nothing of value to be had for an experienced driver and Bens narration is irritating.

Entertaining but impractical

Even though I love the stories Ben Collins shares, his advanced driving tips elude me simply because 1. I do not have the car to do them with, and 2. if I had one, verbal instructions on how to parallel park a car while sliding it in just to not work for me.
For me I'd have loved more stories and less instructions.

Good listen for driving lovers. loved it.

This is well worth a listen if you love driving and want to pick up some very handy tips. Some of the tips could save your life. It also gives you more knowledge on how and why your car behaves in situations and how to safely correct. Highly recommend.

Satisfactory but leaves the user wanting

Needs videos really for the more technical information, but otherwise adequate. I learned to be patient on the clutch when changing gears for smooth rolling

whilst most of what Ben says is correct it like giving a live grenade to a child and telling them it will make a loud bang and not to pull the pin out. Both of those statements are true but you might show the child what would happen but IF you wrote them a note then it would be a recipe for disaster.

Fun and informative.

Great mix of fun anecdotes and fantastic insights into what we should all know about the cars we drive. Basically “the stuff you were never taught when you learned to drive, the stuff your mates pretend to know but don’t....” Definitely made me a better driver (speed has nothing to do with it. )

Excellent advice and a few good yarns to boot

Ben's advice is aimed at day to day driving and for driving near your limits and Ben's credentials cannot be doubted. The book is full of sensible advice and recounts a number of Ben's very entertaining exploits. It is a book that inspires you to want to drive more smoothly and safely. I really enjoyed listening to Ben's narration too, he comes across as smart and has some great one-liners.

Mandatory Listening for people with a licence

I thought this was overall excellent but find myself dropping star review for performance and story. Why? well these ratings are normally used for delivery and story content. This is no Morgan Freeman narrating what happened to Andy. This book struck me as more of a dictionary of driving. As such rates lesser than Andy's story. While he probably could've invited Jeremy Clarkson in to replace some content with entertainment, it would only leave this to be just anther Top Gear offshoot. In short I'm glad he chose to avoid the "Jeremy opinion" and stick with the facts. Driving is a subject that attracts heated attitudes and opinions yet Ben seems to have avoided that rabbit hole. What we get instead hear is the factual guidance of how to drive, all based on Bens accumulated experiences. I'd describe the approach is as per a top surgeon explaining what you need to do to perform an operation. Ben has approached this as your mentor, explaining the consequences of your inputs and how that affects your vehicle. But this is not a government sponsored safety lecture. Just think of yourself as a celebrity being instructed on how to best handle your car. This could be the ideal present for young adults that you wish to see living as well as older people who say their driving effort is "good enough".. Finally I'd like to see a follow up to this with guest contribution from other professional drivers, reinforcing what is said. The content of this book is a well overdue public service and I'm glad Ben stepped up. This definitely belongs on the must read list. Thanks Ben

Great book

I have missed my calling to be a racing driver I’m a tiny bit to old now and I’ve only just recently discovered Motorsport, I have recently decided to try similar racing on PlayStation and computer and this book so far has given me tips on how to get faster but also helped in everyday driving and I still have 5 hours remaining I recommend this book to anyone who wants to improve their driving skill in real life, increase speed while racing in a game or even become faster on the track if you have that opportunity

Refreshingly Useful and Straightforward

This is an ideal listen if you haven't yet engaged with the subject of your driving skills. Ben's clarity of instruction and depth of experience means you get an informative guide by a well practised instructor, not so much a narrative epic by a rehearsed thespian. You can tell Ben regularly teaches these things and practices them to incredible levels. Illustrative side-stories about driving for movies and TV are also nice.
