Lane Moore is a rare performer who is as impressive onstage - whether hosting her iconic show Tinder Live or being the enigmatic front woman of It Was Romance - as she is on the page, as both a former writer for The Onion and an award-winning sex and relationships editor for Cosmopolitan. But her story has had its obstacles, including being her own parent, living in her car as a teenager, and moving to New York City to pursue her dreams. This power is usually called empathy and can be a powerful weapon for dealing with people and life in general if you know how to control it. But if you don't put a leash on it, you can soon find yourself spiraling into a vicious circle of anxiety and depression.

Over a third of us are now single. With the single camp growing at 10 times the rate of the actual population, it is now the norm to be single well into our 30s - the average marriage age for women is 35 and 37 for men. But nobody seems to have told society, rom-com makers, songwriters, marriage-hungry mothers, 'tick-tock' uncles, our mates or us that. Cue: single anxiety. Love addiction. Spending hours scrolling through dating apps. Being inconsolable when he/she doesn't text. Humming 'Here Comes the Bride' when they do.

Bittersweet
This book made me really re-think so much about the narratives we're all told from a young age and how those impact us in sometimes really unexpected ways.
author had a rough childhood/adolescence/early adulthood - but I think the beauty of this book is that even for those people who have had fairly pleasant upbringings, it hits some really powerful chords. I was worried that it might not resonate with me, but I was shocked by just how universal some of her takeaways really are.

A beautiful, heartening listen
This little beauty came into my life at just the right time. It’s a frank meditation on what happens to us when the people that are supposed to love us most leave us with trauma instead. It’s refreshing to see someone talk so candidly about how hard healing can be— to reckon with the losses we continue to carry, to try and make sense of what the harm has cost us

A vulnerable and real voyage to self love
For anyone who felt alone growing up and then tried to bandage that alone feeling with whatever they could find as they grew you will find solace in this book knowing you are not alone. That’s what I took away from it. To read about a person who experienced the complexity of life alone as i did and as so many do was refreshing and made me feel less alone. I was particularly touched by the holiday chapter because those couple months from Halloween to Valentine’s Day are a beast for me. I have kids and I do holidays with my kids and people don’t understand how I still feel alone on holidays but i do. It’s an old pain and one that gets better each year with more and more self love.

Even if you don't think you need it, you do.
I bought this book because of her interview on the Hannahlyze This podcast and I am so grateful I did. I grew up in a big household with divorced parents so needing emotional and physical attention has always been something I was afraid to voice. I also knew that I enjoy my alone time and maybe, to some, I have too much of it but as she said, I'd rather be alone making myself happy than out feeling like I do not belong. Not to mention, she has so many amazing chapters about romantic relationships and how it is time we stop settling for people who drain us and start asking for what we want. She reassures, she rants, she spills, she makes sure she is heard and also that you are heard. I think everyone can get something from this book so if you're wondering if you should buy it, just do it. You'll feel less alone by the first page.

raw, emotional, brave.
It takes a tremendous amount of courage to tell your story- especially when it involves trauma; even more so when you have PTSD. This book is remarkably open and brave. As painful and emotional as it can be to relate deeply , it's also comforting to know that you're not alone in your experiences... yeah, I cried. a lot... but I also laughed, smiled, and felt understood throughout the book. Lane has accomplished & overcome so much already and has immense talent. I'm grateful she shared her story and can't wait to see what she does next!

Not what I expected!
I thought this was a book about "how to be alone". I'm a loner, myself, and I sometimes find it hard to accept the fact that I truly just like to be alone. I thought this book would give me tips on acceptance. Instead, this book is a memoir. I was disappointed at first, but then as I kept listening, I could relate to so many things that the author said. Before I knew it, I was busting out laughing--she is HILARIOUS!! So many creative one-liners and descriptions of situations and circumstances. I absolutely love her and can't wait to listen more. If I am in NYC anytime soon, I'll be sure to catch her show. I'm keeping this book and plan to listen it again, which is rare for this bookworm.
