After the Civil War, that mantle was assumed by the Western cowboy, singlehandedly defending his land against barbarians and savages as well as from a rapacious government. New states entered the Union in the late nineteenth century and western and southern leaders found yet more common ground. As resources and people streamed into the West during the New Deal and World War II, the region's influence grew. "Movement Conservatives," led by westerners Barry Goldwater, Richard Nixon, and Ronald Reagan, claimed to embody cowboy individualism and worked with Dixiecrats to embrace the ideology of the Confederacy.

Richardson's searing book seizes upon the soul of the country and its ongoing struggle to provide equal opportunity to all. Debunking the myth that the Civil War released the nation from the grip of oligarchy, expunging the sins of the Founding, it reveals how and why the Old South not only survived in the West, but thrived.

Heather Cox Richardson does it again

I really enjoy Ms Richardson's style and delivery. I was drawn to this book after watching many of her YouTube videos. She makes the subject matter accessible and weaves a through line from the past to the present.

A real eye opener.

I would say that we have come full circle, but in actuality it appears that the same forces of oligarchy and the subjugation others from the founding days of this country have been here all along - & usually not in the shadows. They have just been very good at obfuscation & blurring of context, at making it very difficult to see them for what they really are - the wealthy, white few who would be the rulers of the many. And they have come very close to achieving their goals. We are very far from out of the woods.

Now I get it!

History as it was, rather than what we were taught. Richardson brings us full circle from the founders expensive vision through the dark years of patriarchy and eventually Hope for the vision that has yet to be fully emancipated.

Outstanding

This book takes the reader through historical events leading up to and including the Civil War, then shows examples of how our government has kept many of the beliefs and systems of the Civil War period in practice up to the present day. It is interesting and I could not stop listening.

a true history lesson

I learned more American history reading this book than all other books together. Ms. Richardson-Cox does an excellent job in narrating her work. I wish this book was a required read for every student.

Scholarship made interesting

HCR researches and writes well but she also reads her book with energy and enthusiasm. Great job!

Fascinating explanation of US history

I learned so much from this book. Beautifully narrated by the author, it logically explains complex developments throughout history that echo strongly in today’s headlines.
