Publisher's summary

An award-winning scientist offers a groundbreaking new understanding of the mind-body connection and its profound impact on everything from advertising to romance. The human body is not just a passive device carrying out messages sent by the brain but rather an integral part of how we think and make decisions. In her groundbreaking new book, Sian Beilock, author of the highly acclaimed Choke, which Time magazine praised for its "smart tips...in order to think clearly...and be cool under pressure," draws on her own cutting-edge research to turn the conventional understanding of the mind upside down in ways that will revolutionize how we live our lives. At the heart of How the Body Knows Its Mind is the tantalizing idea that our bodies "hack" our brains. The way we move affects our thoughts, our decisions, and even our preferences for particular products. Called "embodied cognition", this new science - of which Beilock is a foremost researcher - illuminates the power of the body and its physical surroundings to shape how we think, feel, and behave. Beilock's findings are as varied as they are surprising. For example, pacing around the room can enhance creativity; gesturing during a speech can help ensure that you don't draw a blank; kids learn better when their bodies are part of the learning process; walking in nature boosts concentration skills; Botox users experience less depression; and much more. From the tricks used by advertisers to the ways body language can improve your memory, Beilock explains a wealth of fascinating interconnections between mind and body and how mastering them can make us happier, safer, and more successful.

PURE SCIENCE WITHOUT ANY FUN OR WOW MOMENTS(BORING

i recommend this book for the people who are new at the are.
They may learn simple facts & techniques that will render their well-being & success...

But for the know it all:
(i expected much more than i found in this book.
Though some of the findings were the latest ones of the era, all the topics & facts were the repeats of the past explorations...
(Even budists have been practising that facts by declaring body & mind are one for thoudands of years)
So what is new and groundbreaking is absent in this book...
(You have to reveal a new finding that will change the old habits,if you want to deserve a good reputation for the job you've done: A finding no one knew but will never forget...)
To put simply,
A huge disappointment for the experts of the topic.

The New Science Of The Mind Body Connection!

Would you listen to How the Body Knows Its Mind again? Why?

Definitely, the material is so fascinating and useful I'm going to want a refresher or two soon.

What was one of the most memorable moments of How the Body Knows Its Mind?

Not so much a moment but an amazing fact, that the mind body connection is a two way street, and knowing that, we can manipulate everything from hormone levels to the sensation of pain.

Which scene was your favorite?

The chapter discussing how physical movement not only improved brain function, but enhanced the retention and recall of information learned while moving or active. This excited me because that's how I listen to my a-books, working and playing.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

How to get an unfair advantage.

Any additional comments?

The part on Dana Carney's and Amy Cuddy's research on body posture and changes in hormone levels was very counter intuitive ("fake it till ya make it" seems like a misnomer now)

listen to your grandma

Sigh... another first world academia publication to 'prove' with scientific terminologies and medical diagnoses what your grandma has been telling you your entire life;

Be kind
Pick good friends
Smile
Sit straight
Don't slouch
Go outside more
Sun is good for you
Eat well
Sleep
Move...

Oh, and for the 21st century, don't forget to add the obligatory:

... in order to increase productivity.
