Publisher's summary

"When I was arrested, my whole world crumbled. I knew that leaders of political parties had been arrested and never heard from again. My only chance at survival was to find a way to escape from the jail."

Orphaned in Poland at the age of 13, Tadeusz "Tad" Haska survived World War II on the run, narrowly evading the Nazis every step of the way. After the war, he daringly escaped jail from the Soviet Secret Police, fled to Sweden, and launched an elaborate plan to smuggle his wife in a coffin on an all-male naval ship.

Discover how Tad's knowledge of nine languages helped him survive in the face of unspeakable adversity.

This book touched my heart. I cried many times listening to the riveting journey of Tad Haska. This book should be a movie! What an amazing story. A must read/listen!!!

Richly detailed

I read a lot more to action, so this was a nice departure for me. The story of this man’s life is details-from his incredible struggles as a young boy in Poland, all the way at his retirement here in United States as a proud citizen.
I especially like when the events in a book stick with me long after I have finished listening to it, and I found that many of the things that this man survived (no spoilers) really struck and emotional chord with me.
While I would have liked to have heard more detail of his wife’s time in occupied Poland, I do appreciate it that this is his story, reconstructed from his notes and journals, not hers.
