Publisher's summary

Not all wizards were born to be heroes.

Things not to do when you find out you’re a wizard:

1. Do not destroy your apartment with magical fire. You will not get the security deposit back.

2. Do not form an alliance with the guy who is trying to murder you. This will end badly.

3. Do not drag the girl you’re desperately in love with into your wizard mess. You risk her watching you fail miserably.

4. Under no circumstances should you get in the middle of an epic magical battle. Death will happen. Lots of death and bad things.

All thing magic literally in the palm of your hand!

I got a kick out of this book. I thought it was funny. To me it maybe leans a little more towards YA even though the characters are in high school but I didn’t mind. It gave me some major Percy Jackson vibes with a hint of Harry Potter with the whole “you’re a wizard!” and discovering magic is indeed real. I loved the idea of a cellphone that has any and all magical information stored on it with apps included. I mean, we are in the 21st century after all. The story moves at a steady pace from beginning to end. Although I kind of felt the battle was a little too quick to happen and maybe a little anticlimactic. It just seemed to happen too fast and not enough tension with the main villain. I’m not sure I completely trust Eric yet either. I’m curious to see how Bryant takes to his magical abilities and I definitely want to see what roles Devon and Elizabeth play in all this.

The narrator did a great job capturing the awkwardness of Bryant’s character. As well as Devon’s suave confidence and Elizabeth’s no nonsense take charge attitude.

harry potter meets sorcerer

this audiobook narrator was spot on for the main character. let me start by saying that.

now the story. it's a mix between the sorcerer's apprentice and Harry Potter. if you've never seen the first -- look it up.
Bryant Adams is your classic shy nerd who loves the Uber pretty girl next door. Well ok it's his classmate but you get the gist. Devon is his handsome popular gets every girl -- and his best friend. together the 3 of them.embark on a journey to find out-- how to kill a phone and save his mother. Turns out he's magical. A wizard to be precise.
It's adventure time for the trio complete with property damage and a villain turned hero. It's a good listen (read). you'll enjoy the fast pace of the book and even the younger ones can enjoy the book.

An action filled adventure!

It starts with an innocent act - finding what turns out to be an indestructible magic cell phone, and wanting to return it to it’s rightful owner. But when said rightful owner takes your mom hostage and calls you a thief, you know things are not going to go the way you planned. Bryant is a typical nerd-type, with a good looking best friend, a crush on the girl of his dreams. When he discovers he’s a wizard, the three of them find themselves on a wild and often scary adventure, caught between two sides, each wanting to control the world of magic in their own way. There’s plenty of action, lots of magic, and some very typical (but still cute and fun) teen drama. These three aren’t just thrown together randomly, we learn they each have their strengths in this journey. The world building is interesting, and the characters intriguing. My favorite line sums it all up quite nicely, “the devil’s in the details, but Fate, she don’t give a shit”.

surprised

I really liked how this book went. I enjoyed the narrator. He held me captive in the story. The story is fun. I also liked getting to know everyone. I have a ADHD 12 almost 13 year old son that enjoys audibles. I plan on recommending him getting this book as one of his class assignments.

Magical adventure!

We follow Bryant who is a geeky kid-but he isn’t your ordinary geeky kid. His mom is the drama teacher and his dad is a millionaire. Devon is his best friend, and we meet Elizabeth who is Bryant’s crush.
We find the trio stomping around New York, who finds themselves running away from danger in a fun, fantasy and magical adventure. All thanks to a mysterious cell phone!
From the beginning I was enthralled by this story and I enjoyed every second of it. I completely understand the book cover now.
The audiobook is narrated by Jacob McNatt, and he does a wonderful job portraying all of the characters. If you enjoy YA fantasy and magical books then I highly recommend this series.
