Publisher's Summary

When Joss, an adopted child, discovers that her real mother has left the beautiful family home, Belheddon Hall, to her, she is thrilled, until she discovers that the Hall is haunted by a presence which will not tolerate husbands or sons living in the house.

When Joss Grant inherits the beautiful old house on the East Anglian coast, it is a dream come true. Eager to begin a new life there with her husband and son, she is also impatient to find out about her newly discovered family who lived there for generations.

But Joss begins to hears echoing voices and senses an invisible presence, watching her from the shadows. Are they spirits from the past? Or is it her imagination? As she learns, with mounting horror, of the house's tragic history, her fears intensify, for she realizes that both her family and her own sanity are at the mercy of a violent and powerful energy which seems beyond anyone's control.

Despite the threat to her own husband and son, Joss is unable to break free, and, in a last desperate attempt, conjures up the presence to deal with ‘it’ once and for all.

A nice enough story to pass some time

A pleasant little ghost story, quite enjoyable, but nothing special. Very like so many of Barbara Erskine's books, if you can't get enough of them then you'll love this, personally I find they are a bit formulaic, but at least that makes this a safe bet! A story of past loves that weren't settled so a modern day heroine has to work out how to let them rest. The narration is a little upper cut, so its hard to get a feel for the characters who all sound like Penelope Keith, apart from the East Anglian locals who all have west country accents!

Excessively Abridged

It’s a very good yarn but too much of the original story has been removed

Brilliant!

I thought I would be disappointed by this shorter novel by Barbara Erskine, but it was just as enjoyable as all of her other novels. Another great masterpiece, brilliantly read by Isla Blair.

A nice, spooky tale

I really enjoyed this book, but wish it was unabridged. I felt it was missing a lot of the historical story that is usually so detailed in her other books. Loved the spooky voice effects!

An intriguing Ghost story

For those who are interested in haunted houses and history I recommend this chilling ghost story. Barbara Erskine has a way of writing that makes you want to find out what happens next. I became quite spooked by some parts of the story that I had to listen during the day! Narrator tells the story well setting the mood.

A hard slog

I found the constant calling of the characters names irritating beyond belief. It was a struggle to listen to the end. The story would have been much more interesting if it had focused more on the ghostly characters and their history, because the story picked up pace when that occurred. There were no great surprises to this story and I would have returned it if I hadn’t returned the previous book I read.
