Publisher's summary

Number one New York Times best-selling author Sarah J. Maas launches her brand-new CRESCENT CITY series with House of Earth and Blood: the story of half-Fae and half-human Bryce Quinlan as she seeks revenge in a contemporary fantasy world of magic, danger, and searing romance.

Bryce Quinlan had the perfect life-working hard all day and partying all night - until a demon murdered her closest friends, leaving her bereft, wounded, and alone. When the accused is behind bars but the crimes start up again, Bryce finds herself at the heart of the investigation. She'll do whatever it takes to avenge their deaths.

Hunt Athalar is a notorious Fallen angel, now enslaved to the Archangels he once attempted to overthrow. His brutal skills and incredible strength have been set to one purpose - to assassinate his boss' enemies, no questions asked. But with a demon wreaking havoc in the city, he's offered an irresistible deal: help Bryce find the murderer, and his freedom will be within reach.

As Bryce and Hunt dig deep into Crescent City's underbelly, they discover a dark power that threatens everything and everyone they hold dear, and they find, in each other, a blazing passion - one that could set them both free, if they'd only let it.

With unforgettable characters, sizzling romance, and pause-resisting suspense, this richly inventive new fantasy series by number one New York Times best-selling author Sarah J. Maas delves into the heartache of loss, the price of freedom - and the power of love.

its okay....

I think I matured past this genre. I didn't need the sexy scenes, the books romance was predictable, the blend of modern and fae was not fully realized (and I don't love it that much). There are some fae physics/logic that didn't seem right to me. Couldn't tell what kind of book the Maas wanted it to be (romance, mystery, fantasy, detective). I love Sarah J Maas and hope she continues the writing but I think this book was a little less polished and a little immature for me, maybe I just grew up some since her last series. The endng moved fast as there was great potential to build that lore earlier that was not used. Maybe in the next book?

READ IT READ IT READ IT.

Iffy reviews almost kept me from reading but I’m SO glad I did. It takes a little bit to get in to it but Maas, as always, has masterfully created an incredible world and characters that you feel as though are your personal friends. Can’t wait to read the next one!

Great Urban Fantasy!

I'm used to SJM's other fantasy titles, so Urban Fantasy was a little different for me, but I loved it! lots of world building, lots of twists and turns to the plot, but I adore Bryce as the FMC!

RUN DON’T WALK TO READ THIS BOOK!

I have not been this totally and completely wrapped up by a book and a group of characters in such a long time. The authors writing has such a way of pulling at every heart string and immersing the reader in this amazing world. The world building and info provided in the beginning and throughout is so necessary and not too much in the slightest. The Narrator for this book is BEYOND and truly does an incredible job at bringing this book to life. I CANNOT wait to start the second book and any other books beyond that the author has lined up for this series! If I could give 10/10 stars I would!

Slow build up, but completely worth it!!

Full disclosure... I am a Sara J. Maas super fan! I own, and thoroughly love, everything that she has ever written.

With that said, I did struggle a little at the beginning of the book as she established the back story and an elaborate world where it took place. It was, however, 1000% worth the wait! The action, romance, witty sarcasm, and epic story telling that I have come to expect from Sarah J. Maas came through in flying color! And Elizabeth Evans did an amazing job (as usual) captivating the audience! I just listened to this book for the second time, and I loved it even more because I was able to pick up on little random clues Maas had left along the way! I highly recommend this book and that you give Maas time to set the ground work for this awesome new series! You won’t regret it!

Great story, characters, voice performance

Started slow for me but once it got going, it kept going, and kept you guessing and addicted. You slowly become attached to the characters and it wraps up nicely, full of warm fuzzies, and intrigue.

A lot going on, but overall enjoyable

The good: it’s got everything you want, an intriguing fantasy world, a love story, a bad ass female lead that is overcoming a rocky past and coming into her own- overall, a truly enjoyable work of fiction that Sarah J. Maas is known for.

The not so good: this story has A LOT going on. A lot of characters and a lot of different layers and hierarchies within the fantasy world. I get that the author is trying to set up the series and build for future storylines along with this one, but man is it hard to keep it up. It took me quite awhile to really become invested in the story at the beginning because of it. In my opinion, the background could have been simplified and the story would have been just as good, and maybe even more so.

Overall though, it’s a great story and I recommend it to anyone who loves YA Fantasy

Captivating fantasy story. Already purchased second book!

I was sucked in and couldn’t get away. Well narrated. Suspenseful and beautiful story. Felt connected to the characters. Maybe it’s because I’m a “young person” but the F bombs and sexual content didn’t bother me but complemented the plot. It was a very small part of a long detailed story, so I’m not sure why so many people are bothered by it.
