The storm occurred in a time before cable news, cell phone alerts and social media. Hurricanes hit the Texas Gulf Coast on a frequent basis with unpredictable impact. No one, including the inhabitants of wealthy neighborhoods, were immune from the wrath of Mother Nature.
Margaret Hudson was 49 and a widow. She lived a comfortable, but somewhat lonely life, with the highlight of each week being a tennis match at the country club with her friend Karen Walker. Encouraged by Karen; Margaret contemplated a return to the dating scent with designs on her new neighbor, a handsome widower, named Gene Myers.
Wayne Myers was 26 and struggling with the aftermath of a work force reduction at an oil field equipment manufacturer.
