Publisher's summary

When someone returns from the dead, it's never going to be good - no matter who it is. No one warned Linda that something dreadful was listening, waiting for the chance, feeding off her grief, when she unwittingly wished aloud that her husband Brian was still alive. She never meant that he should escape his grave. Now, to put things right, Linda has to play a frightening game with the mysterious, disturbing undertaker, James Bracken. The rules are impossible, horrifying. It's a good thing Linda didn't throw away Brian's favorite chair. He still likes to sit there, watching the blank television.

Fantastic Short Story

If you could sum up Horror Story, Volume I in three words, what would they be?

Totally Wanted More. - I know not a summary but that is what you get

What other book might you compare Horror Story, Volume I to and why?

Not necessarily a book but this would have made an excellent Tales from the Crypt or Tales from the Dark Side episode. Maybe I say that because this book is a short story but the vibe of the story itself fit that and I thought it was great.

Have you listened to any of G.M. Hague’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No I haven't; but, I do always enjoy when the author narrates their own book. I feel that you get something more from them reading it.

If you could take any character from Horror Story, Volume I out to dinner, who would it be and why?

The Undertaker. Don't want to spoil anything but really I couldn't find another character that I actually liked enough to spend dinner with, especially since depending on who it was they might try to kill me.

Well-written and excellent narration

GM Hague is one of my favorite authors of creepy stories. The story goes from the mundane events of planning a funeral to the disturbing and unsettling thoughts of a grieving widow.
Highly recommended for a great modern horror story.

Good story!

Any additional comments?

I thought the author (who is also the narrator) did a great job with this story. The ending was less predictable than I thought it might be, and I could easily visualize the events of the story as it unfolded.

I also thought that the narration was well done and I wasn't distracted at all by the author/narrator using his natural voice for female character dialogue. (If he had attempted a falsetto-ish voice for female characters, as some narrators do, then it might have been irritating or distracting.).

The only minor quibble I have is that I didn't really understand the continuity of the 'game' before Linda got involved. I don't want to give away plot information, but I'm not sure why other people hadn't been in Linda's situation beforehand. Perhaps this was explained and I missed it; it certainly didn't distract me from enjoying the story.

I have no regrets about investing time to listen to this audiobook. I would recommend it to others and I wouldn't hesitate to read/listen to other stories from this author in the future.

I provided an honest review in exchange for a complimentary copy of the audiobook from the author, publisher, or narrator.

Til death do us part?

I was in between listens and realized there was one "Horror Story" I hadn't read: the first.

Vol 1 follows a grief-stricken young woman who recently lost her husband to cancer and seemingly wants nothing more than to get him back. She gets her wish, but is then stuck trying to figure out how to then get rid of him.

As usual, Graham does a pretty good job of delivering characters with some dimension. We soon find out that our protagonist wasn't exactly faithful to her dying husband and you both pity her due to her plight and dislike her for her actions and attitude. That said, I still kept rooting for her to find a solution.

I'm now fully caught up on all of GM's Horror Story series and I think Vol 1 ranks toward the top for me. It's got a plethora of creepy characters, a bit of a mystery (sadly, not really "solved"), and if nothing else, it'll serve as a chilling reminder to check your documents before you sign.

Sometimes they come back

Would you consider the audio edition of Horror Story, Volume I to be better than the print version?

I haven't read the print version so I can't comment on this point; however the book was well narrated by the author.

What did you like best about this story?

I liked that the story was somewhat relatable and despite the obvious supernatural theme it felt really grounded and not utterly far fetched like other horror novels can tend to be; that's important in a good horror story and I think G. M. Hague had this aspect of the book perfectly balanced and the characters were fairly believable in their actions. The circumstances at least at the beginning happened to a very ordinary couple to could have been any friend or family member.

Would you listen to another book narrated by G.M. Hague?

Yes definitely; I plan to listen to and review the other 2 books currently available in this series.

If you could take any character from Horror Story, Volume I out to dinner, who would it be and why?

I don't think you'd especially want to take ANY of the characters in this story out to dinner! They all had nasty sides to them that wouldn't make for particulary pleasent company.

Any additional comments?

I enjoyed this book. It was essentially a "long" short story, not quite a novella either. A quick satisfying listen. I hadn't read anything from the author before and was pleasently surprised. I am looking forward to listening the other horror shorts he has written in this series now.

careful what you wish for...

This was an original story about what happens when you wish for something just for the sake of wishing. A grieving wife wishes her husband would come back from the dead. Little does she know, that something is listening and grants her wish. She now must learn how to play this game to get her husband to move on to his final resting place. I thoroughly enjoyed this book the concept was new to me and I thought that the writer did an excellent job as did the narrator.

Some Good Horror Fun

Any additional comments?

If this isn't a cautionary tale for the old adage "be careful what you wish for" then I don't know what is! "Horror Story Volume I: Death Wish" is a different kind of short form horror that left me wanting more. One thing I really appreciated about this story is that once the "horror" part of it was established, I thought I guessed what the twist would be and I so often (disappointingly) guess correctly. I was completely wrong about this one and I'm so glad! It's lovely to be surprised and G.M. Hague does a great job of this. This was a tight, well written, spooky, fun short horror book that I would recommend to any and all horror lovers!
