Publisher's Summary

April 1803, and the Peace of Amiens is failing as Horatio Hornblower takes a three-master on a vital reconnaissance mission… On the day of his marriage to Maria, Hornblower is ordered to take the Hotspur and head for Brest – war is coming and Napoleon will not catch His Majesty’s navy with its britches round its ankles. With thoughts of his new life as a husband intruding on his duties, Hornblower must prove himself to be not only the most capable commander in the fleet, but also its most daring if he is to stop the French gaining the upper hand. This is the third of eleven books chronicling the adventures of C. S. Forester’s inimitable nautical hero, Horatio Hornblower.

Excellent continuation of the story

A comfortable passage of the early years in Hornblowers life. Plenty of action and a good backstory to boot. Brings home the hardship of service in a HM Ship during the many years of War with both the French and Spanish Navies

What is good enough for Winston Churchill is good enough for me

I adore Hornblower I am 80 years of age and I must have read the Hornblower series hundreds of times and will continue to do so. A mention for Christian Rodska. Genius!!!

Enjoyable story

This story of Hornblower’s adventures in command of the Hotspur paints a detailed picture of the stream of challenges he faced and the constant consciousness and consideration of what the right thing do to is, for each circumstance. Doing the right thing doesn’t always get rewarded.

he reads Hornblower so well

Favourite so far, reading in chronological order as opposed to order written. An excellent series . Definitely on par with Aubrey and Maturin

Enjoyable book<br />

Essentially a coordinated set of gripping short stories. I had Google Maps of NW France and of Spain displayed which was a great help. I just wish I had a hand book on sailing ship rigging.

Can't see what the fuss is all about

I'm afraid I really don't know what the fuss is all about with Hornblower. This is a rather drawn out description of a prolonged blockade of French ports in which the technical details of how to use a ship in this kind of setting have been drawn from a rather tedious naval manual. It is as if the author is trying to prove his naval know-how when, clearly, he couldn't have got it first hand. There are a few "events" which liven the story, but too much focus on rather petty domestic trivia. Even that is repeated as if the author forgot what he had said before - how many times do we need to be told that the main character spent some months ashore earning a living as a professional gambler?

Flawless.

Apart from the somewhat bewildering "why is he marrying this woman" first chapter, this is truly flawless storytelling. The sense of being there is strong and all the characters and their actions ring true. A great listen.

Christian Rodska - better than flawless. His narration is nothing short of fantastic.

Outstanding.

My favourite Hornblower book so far. I’ve listened to them in chronological order, I.e. following his fictional career rather than the order they were written and I’ve found no disadvantage of doing it this way and I recommend it to anyone who is unsure. A thoroughly enjoyable listen, excellently narrated.

A magnificent experience

A superlative reading of a well crafted book. Meticulous detail has gone into writing this book and the execution of it as an audio book was enjoyable in the extreme.
