Learn about the mysterious Hope Diamond with iMinds insightful audio knowledge series. The 45.52-carat Hope Diamond is the largest deep-blue diamond in the world. In its body of less than one cubic inch, it holds a history dripping with mystery, conspiracy, and celebrity. It is now housed behind three inches of bulletproof glass in the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, and looks out at a world fixated with its beauty and history.
Originally 115 carats, the Hope Diamond was discovered in India by the French merchant-traveler Jean Tavernier in the 1660s. Born in 1605, Tavernier was apprenticed to a jeweler at a young age. Later in life, between 1631 and 1638, he made six trips to India to obtain and trade diamonds. He was reputed to have discovered the Hope Diamond in the forehead of a statue of the Hindu goddess Sita in a temple. His alleged theft of the diamond spawned the famed story of the "curse".

In 1939, a team of workers beneath the Vatican unearthed an early Christian grave. This surprising discovery launched a secret quest that would last decades a quest to discover the long-lost burial place of the Apostle Peter. From earliest times, Christian tradition held that Peter, a lowly fisherman from Galilee, whom Christ made leader of his church was executed in Rome by Emperor Nero and buried on Vatican Hill. But his tomb had been lost to history. Now, funded anonymously by a wealthy American, a small army of workers embarked on the dig of a lifetime.

Art scams are today so numerous that the specter of a lawsuit arising from a mistaken attribution has scared a number of experts away from the business of authentication and forgery, and with good reason. Art scams are increasingly convincing and involve incredible sums of money. The cons perpetrated by unscrupulous art dealers and their accomplices are proportionately elaborate. Anthony M. Amore's The Art of the Con tells the stories of some of history's most notorious yet untold cons.

Little black dresses. Fake pearls. Jersey knit. Blazers. Ballet flats. Today - and for nearly the last hundred years - we all see some version of Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel every time we pass a woman on the street. But few among us realize that Chanel’s role in the events of the twentieth century was as pervasive as her influence on fashion, or how deeply she absorbed and then brilliantly reimagined the historical currents around her.

Historia
At the start of the 17th century, Paris was known for a few monuments, but it had not yet put its brand on urban space. Like many European cities, it was still emerging from its medieval past. But within a century, Paris would be transformed into the modern and mythic city we now know. Most people associate the signature characteristics of Paris with the 19th century. Joan DeJean demonstrates that the Parisian model for urban space was in fact invented two centuries earlier, when the first full design for the French capital was implemented.

Is there anything new to say about Thomas Jefferson and slavery? The answer is a resounding yes. Henry Wiencek's eloquent, persuasive book - based on new information coming from archaeological work at Monticello and on hitherto overlooked or disregarded evidence in Jefferson's papers - opens up a huge, poorly understood dimension of Jefferson's world. We must, Wiencek suggests, follow the money.

45 Carat Cursed Diamond
This short listen on the Hope Diamond is a lot of fun, detailing its discovery in India in 1653, and its change in size over time and ownership. The mythology of it being cursed and the fate of those it came into contact which is indeed intriguing, whether or not you believe it. Its rare blue color due to trace amounts of boron atoms and the cut (antique cushion) both serve to make the Hope diamond unique and valuable. Starting out at 112 carats, it was cut down to about 45 carats in 1812 by Daniel Eliason, a London jeweler, the seventh owner. In the 1830s it became known as The Hope Diamond under ownership of Henry Phillip Hope. Now owned by the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC where it is part of the collection of the National Museum of Natural History.
