Publisher's summary

Homer’s Iliad and Odyssey are unquestionably two of the greatest epic masterpieces in Western literature. Though more than 2,700 years old, their stories of brave heroics, capricious gods, and towering human emotions are vividly timeless.

The Iliad can justly be called the world’s greatest war epic. The terrible and long-drawn-out siege of Troy remains one of the classic campaigns, the heroism and treachery of its combatants unmatched in song and story. Driven by fierce passions and loyalties, men and gods battle to a devastating conclusion.

The Odyssey chronicles the many trials and adventures Odysseus must pass through on his long journey home from the Trojan wars to his beloved wife. Though the stormy god of the ocean has sworn vengeance against him, and witches and sirens try to lure him off course, Odysseus is clever and has the brilliant goddess Athena on his side.

Homer (9th or 8th century B.C.) is the presumed author of the Iliad and the Odyssey, the two greatest epic poems of ancient Greece. Virtually nothing is known about his life. Tradition has it that he was blind. Most scholars believe he composed the Iliad and the Odyssey by relying on oral traditions. Their value lies chiefly in the poetry itself, moving from sublime passages about the gods and heroic exploits to passages expressing deep human emotion.

Clear and entertaining, the use of altered voices and excitement keeps you in the story. I would recommend this for anyone

I’ve always wanted to read these books, with my lack of time this is the best way. The narrator keeps you involved and interested. I can’t think of any criticism right now which is strange because I like being critical but this book was good all around.

Not for the weak-kneed!

The most excellent story of Odysseus told masterfully by the narrator, keeps the listener on edge of seat as it were. Homer’s use of occasional rhyme, intense detail and powerfully exciting story-telling keeps the listener satisfied hour after hour.

Everyone must read

Last time I read Homer was in college; over 20 years ago. This was a good read and makes me wish I wouldn’t have waited so long

Great experience of both classics

Excellent and enjoyable reading of both books by Anthony Heald. Perfect casting to choose a narrator for such material. I have a 2nd Audible version, but found myself returning to this one repeatedly.

Wonderful !

Have always loved the odyssey first time with the Iliad. Achilles might have been a great warrior but he was a bratty one.

Pretty good.

I enjoyed listening. Didn't much like the Christianese or Hebraisms which were out of place.

Better than a Movie!!!!!

I enjoyed this book series very much. I had seen old time movies, with the mechanical monsters, but listening to the real story, added depth and feelings.
I know we hear of the Romance between, Romeo and Juliet, but what Woman wouldn't want to feel her Husband's love so sincere, as Penelopia and Odesseus??? He. was gone for twenty years and the multiple adventure's with seductive sirens and always yearning for your true love, Penelopia. His Son, stood up for them both. This way he could bring together, the true love of his Parents. WOW!! GREAT adaptation!!

Best narration I have ever listened to

This is obviously a tried and true epics with great stories of old. What sets this apart is the outstanding narration by Anthony Heald. It was like listening to a play. I bought 3 other classics he narrated just to continue to enjoy his readings.
