Publisher's summary

Raine Stockton and her high-spirited, big-hearted golden retriever, Cisco, are accustomed to being heroes wherever they go. But there's a new dog in town, and Raine and Cisco find themselves unexpectedly upstaged by a flashy K-9 addition to the sheriff's department. Nike and her handler, Jolene, are part of a new government-funded program for law enforcement agencies, and though Raine admires Nike's talent almost as much as she resents Jolene's arrogance, she can't help wondering why the Department of Homeland Security would send such an expensive gift to their sleepy, little Smoky Mountain community.

Sheriff Buck Lawson has his hands full with an upcoming election, a bizarre murder, and a special appearance by a celebrity politician at the Fourth of July parade, and he is not about to look a gift horse - or dog - in the mouth. But when things go horribly wrong at a children's camp just outside of town, where Raine and Cisco are spending the holiday weekend, the scattered puzzle pieces begin to form a terrifying picture. In a desperate battle against an enemy whose face they can't even see, Raine, Jolene, Cisco, Nike, and Buck must work together and reach for depths of courage they never knew they had to save the lives of those they love.

Soft-Headed Liberal Author

I love Golden Retrievers, and I was hoping for a fun little story that I could escape into for awhile. Unfortunately, this tale quickly devolves into some fantasy about white male "terrorists" and evil AR15's...

It was all too apparent that the author knows nothing about guns, terrorists, or dog training, all of which were central to her story. The nonsense was just too distracting to be able to enjoy the story.

I wish Audible had a credit refund policy....

Loved it - kept me guessing until the end!

Love every one of the Raine Stockton series. This edition added characters, new adventures and dangers that kept me wondering and wanting to go back and re-listen to make sure i didn't miss a clue!!! Each book makes me feel like Raine, Cisco and the gang are friends that i would love to hang out with. The only problem is that I'm always left waiting anxiously for the next book. As an owner of 3 rescue dogs i find myself picking up training tricks to try! Keep them coming and please keep Donna Postel as the narrator! She's my favorite female narrator -even doing the male voices!

Good, but series gets too political for me.

I listened to the whole series including reading the one that's not on audio. I love dog series, especially search and rescue and this one is pretty good, but there are a lot of things that bothered me in it. The main character is a dog trainer, but she is the worst dog trainer ever. It's like all of her dogs are out of control most of the time and she has no clue as to what they need. I'm surprised, but I somehow could get around that and enjoy this series and Raine is a likable person. One of my favorite characters is Sonny the dog psychic because she would tell Raine exactly what the dog needed which Raine should have known, but still it takes her a while to figure it out.

Very disappointing that I got this far into the books when they get political. The bad guy extremists are called Patriots so I'm assuming the author is a liberal and trying to make conservatives look bad. :( I was hoping that would be contained to just this one story, but was brought up again in later books as an extra punch. It makes me sad that an otherwise pretty good story has to bring up politics. Why even go there and alienate half your audience? I enjoyed the narrator, it's just apparent the author doesn't know much about dog training and then again, the politics.

Awesome

I accidentally read this at the right time. By the end of it it was Fourth of July. Awesome story as usual.

Suspenseful and action-packed

I'm faithfully listening my way through this series. I appreciate how the characters grow. And are shown and very human - imperfect people doing their best in an imperfect world. The addition of some diverse characters has been awkward. In the last story, the villains were sociopathic lesbians. In this story the first black character starts out as a humorless bitch. Um, how about some positive portrayals of healthy and happy gay characters. And black characters who are affable and accepted into the community? I will keep listening and hoping for positive portrayals of non white, non straight characters. And the narrator also seems to see her heroine as a bit foolish and her big strong boyfriend as the sensible, rational one who's usually right about everything.

Pretty good

Loved it until last chapter or so. Didn't have the ending to match the buildup.
