Daniel Stern's connection with audiences is cemented in movies like Home Alone and City Slickers, and in his debut memoir, Home and Alone, he is the Everyman narrator on a ride into the human side of Hollywood. Experience what it's like driving Robert Redford in his Porsche at 100 mph, or stripping down for a nude scene in front of a group of strangers.

Share the out-of-body moments of flying alone with Mel Gibson on his jet to Las Vegas and smashing a fake mustache onto Gary Busey's face while cursing him out on the pitcher's mound of Wrigley Field. Join him in his triumphant stories like conquering his dyslexia as the voice of The Wonder Years, and his terrifying ones like being sued for $25 million by CBS and Columbia pictures. His insights into marriage, children, parents, and parenting are not only hilarious, but packed with subtle wisdom. But the real surprises are in Stern's off-screen roles as a bronze sculptor, cattle rancher, avocado farmer, and public servant. The hard work and commitment he has put into his on-screen successes are applied with the same intensity to every aspect of his life.

From creating monumental public art projects and founding a Boys & Girls Club to visiting troops in Iraq and learning to birth a cow, he has lived it all. Home and Alone is for anyone who needs reminding that nothing is impossible if you put your mind to it.

What a great book! Mr Stern has led an incredible life and as he often says “what are the chances?” I was aware that we had grown up in the same town, went to the same high school, dropped out in the eleventh grade….. although he is a few years older than I and was in the same Hebrew school class as my older sister, which was actually in a church. It was wonderful to hear about some, not many but a few of the places I remember fondly. We were both very lucky to have had the opportunity to come of age in a town which was much like on “The Wonder Years.” I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the audio version of this book, his narration is epic and couldn’t have been done by anyone else. The story and his history, along with the endless stream of humor makes this a book I will enjoy listening to again. The parts of his life that I had no knowledge of were vividly enlightening and of much interest to me. What a fascinating, generous and fulfilling life he has had, so far. I can only hope for many more wonderful years for him and his family.

The back story of Rookie of the year and Bushwhacked was awesome. Marv Merchants and the sticky bandits for life.

Hearing Daniel’s story in his own colorful and enthusiastic candor was a delight. He kept the Hollywood liberal politics to a minimum. The behind the scenes stories of Daniel’s work and life were never boring! My husband was an extra and drove our red 58’ vintage GMC truck in a film Daniel was in called “Coupe Deville.” You can see the Red truck behind the Cadillac on a highway scene in the Fort Myers area. My husband drove our truck in a baseball cap and got to meet, and share meals on the set with Daniel, Patrick Dempsey and the gregarious cast which was a cool personal connection. Excellent writing and storytelling-Thanks Daniel for sharing. Light and love to you and your wonderful family and thank you for supporting Boys and girls clubs🩷

Honest and entertaining! What are the chances?

I enjoyed the book and his story immensely. Even though he’s a bleeding left-wing liberal every movie he mentioned that I’ve watched was outstanding and the way he described all the work behind the scenes was fascinating. And his politics did not really get in the way of the story. He seems to really care for his neighbors and of course his family so I highly recommend this book.

Such an engaging personality. I felt like he was talking to me directly.

I like that Daniel took a simple character and created an icon. l loved that he used Marv 's fame to bring joy to people.

From a crook to a world hero.
