Story
Rooted in the past, but right for today, the NRSV continues the tradition of William Tyndale, the King James Version, the American Standard Version, and the Revised Standard Version. Equally important, it sets a new standard for the 21st century. The NRSV stands out among the many translations because it is "as literal as possible" in adhering to the ancient texts and only "as free as necessary" to make the meaning clear in graceful, understandable English.

A masterpiece of deep learning and fine sensibility, Robert Alter's translation of the Hebrew Bible, now complete, reanimates one of the formative works of our culture. Capturing its brilliantly compact poetry and finely wrought, purposeful prose, Alter renews the Old Testament as a source of literary power and spiritual inspiration. From the family frictions of Genesis and King David's flawed humanity to the serene wisdom of Psalms and Job's incendiary questioning of God's ways, these magnificent works of world literature resonate with a startling immediacy.

Gordon Campbell, expert in Renaissance literatures, tells the fascinating and complex story of how this translation came to be commissioned, of who the translators were, and of how the translation was accomplished. The story does not end with the printing of that first edition, but introduces the subsequent generations who edited and interacted with the text.

Story
David Bentley Hart undertook this new translation of the New Testament in the spirit of "etsi doctrina non daretur", "as if doctrine is not given". Reproducing the texts' often fragmentary formulations without augmentation or correction, he has produced a pitilessly literal translation, one that captures the texts' impenetrability and unfinished quality while awakening listeners to an uncanniness that often lies hidden beneath doctrinal layers.

Story
In A History of the Bible, John Barton argues that the Bible is not a prescription to a complete, fixed religious system, but rather a product of a long and intriguing process, which has inspired Judaism and Christianity, but still does not describe the whole of either religion. Barton shows how the Bible is indeed an important source of religious insight for Jews and Christians alike, yet argues that it must be listened to in its historical context - from its beginnings in myth and folklore to its many interpretations throughout the centuries....

Whether taken as a book of faith or a cultural artifact, the New Testament is among the most significant writings the world has ever known, its web of meaning relied upon by virtually every major writer in the last 2,000 years. Yet the New Testament is not only one of Western civilization’s most believed books, but also one of its most widely disputed, often maligned, and least clearly understood, with a vast number of people unaware of how it was written and transmitted.

DO NOT DOWNLOAD - not orgainzed by books
The Bible is organized by books and chapters and has been for hundreds of years. THIS horrible version is divided into "Parts" and "Chapters" making it impossible to find the actual books of the Bible. For example, if you want to listen to John 4 there is no way to find it.

Not sorted by book???? Who does that?
No book headings makes it impossible to find specific books. Seriously, chapter 45??? why not just name the book. Unless you have the books memorized by number, you’ll have to guess and listen to find a specific book. How stupid is this?

Frustrating!
Why should such a good recording be spoiled by not laying out the chapters properly? It would have been so easy to add to the audio chapter #s what part of the bible the chapter is referring to. Surely the publishers know that people don't generally listen to the whole bible from beginning to end. (No problem if you want to do that). Most of us what to read a particular book or part of a book.

Good straightforward reading with no distractions
I prefer this straightforward reading compared to the dramatized version with sound effects, as though the Bible need help to be exciting (nothing can make the genealogical lists anyway). The narrator does not have an exaggerated nor monotonous reading, which lets you focus on the words and and contemplate on the meaning. The book does list the books by name (Genesis, Exodus, etc), which is better than the other versions, which has only chapter numbers (Word of Promise NKJV). You can't go chapter by chapter, unfortunately, so there is an assumption that you are reading the whole book, not a specific chapter. With short books, that is fine, but for the book of Psalms, it makes you rail at the malnourished table of content....

Well read but badly indexed.
The Bible is more of a reference and study book than one to be read in continuous form from start to finish. Yet the chapters of this audio version do not reflect or show the books and chapters of the Bible. So getting around it is hard. Please re do the chapters to allow for the reader of the word.

What were the publishers thinking? To produce an audio book version of the NRSV Bible is great, so long as you hire a good narrator, which they did, and PROVIDE CHAPTER HEADINGS. Without the latter, they may as well not have bothered.

The Holy Bible NRSV.
I found this to be a wonderful Bible version full of the good news. Listening was made much easier because of John Bank’s clear and concise tone of voice. I’ve read The ‘paper’ Bible twice, but there’s always something new to learn, and listening to the NRSV on Audible, I picked up so much more than I thought I would. All that said, it was a shame that I couldn’t jump from Book to Book if I so wanted. What’s up with that Audible? However, I still highly recommend this copy for the narration.
