Publisher's Summary

After saving her three-year-old daughter from a car-jacking, off-duty police detective Jocelyn Rush ends up in the ER. The last person she expects to run into is Anita Grant, former prostitute and an old acquaintance from Jocelyn's days on patrol. In spite of her obvious injuries - mutilated hands and feet - Anita refuses to talk about what happened. Reluctantly, Jocelyn backs off, and Anita's case goes to Philadelphia's Special Victims Unit.

Before long, Jocelyn is pulled into the SVU's investigation. Anita is finally ready to talk, but only to Jocelyn. Her story is harrowing, even to a seasoned veteran like Jocelyn. Working with SVU, Jocelyn's investigation unearths a series of similar crimes going back four years. Three men are preying on local prostitutes, viciously assaulting and mutilating them.

The police apprehend two of the suspects, but the third eludes capture. As the hunt for the most sadistic of the three intensifies, and his crimes escalate, Jocelyn and her colleagues have precious few leads. Then a monster from Jocelyn's past resurfaces. She doesn't want to be reminded of the terrible secret that destroyed her family nearly 20 years earlier, but the man offers her a lead that could crack Anita's case.

To solve it, Jocelyn must connect her past with her present-before a sadistic attacker sets his sights on her.

Terrible Sound Quality

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narration had a tinny echo, and at times the reader was so robotic I wondered if it was a real person. I could not finish it because of the narration.

If you’ve listened to books by Lisa Regan before, how does this one compare?

I haven't.

What didn’t you like about Craig R. Nickerson’s performance?

Robotic, poor sound quality.

You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?

It is probably a good story, but I will have to read it in print if I ever go back to it.

Any additional comments?

I need to remind myself to listen to the samples before purchasing.

Better than the ratings

I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars. I settled on three stars because it is a mystery novel and I was certain of the solution to the mystery before the book was half complete.

Poor audio quality. It sounds like an an amateur!

So disappointing!! The narrator sounds like he's in a tunnel. I'm glad I didn't have to pay for this. I love Kindle Unlimited!

Ok story, narrator wrong for book.

The character development was well written. No surprise plot twist, the "who done it" was no surprise. The male narrator for a female, first person story, was all wrong. It was a decent story to past time but not one that I'd search for a sequel.

Hold Still

What a read! Kept me guessing who it could be. Not all of us have good pasts, that is no reason to keep ruining peoples lives. ThAnk God that some of us are Blessed with Strength, Courage and the Will to keep on moving forward, no matter how hard life is! It is up to yourself to give in or soldier on! These gals chose to soldier on and make the best of their life and to wrong the rights of their tormentors! That is a great person! I would recommend this book to book lovers because we need more good-hearted people like this in our world!

Great book, not great audio

The book itself is great, I love Lisa Regan, and this book did not disappoint. However the narrator wasn't good and the sound quality was awful!

The Audible was horrible.

The Narrator read the book from his basement. Nevertheless, I gave the book a chance and found it interesting. Good Suspense.

Terrible Audio

The story itself was fairly good and interesting. The audio was awful. The narrator was just okay. With this audio, I'd have rather read the the book myself.

Messed up

Consequences of the actions people take are real and damning sometimes. This book really points out how one thing ripples a long way and time. Career choices are made differently. The choice to use drugs or not to use. Evidence needed or lack of evidence can keep people out of prison or put them away for very long time.Loved the story.

Worst performance I’ve ever experienced

I couldn’t get past the first few chapters. The narration was tinney and low quality. And the narrators voice didn’t narrate, but just read it, and somewhat stiffly. A big disappointment.
