Publisher's Summary

In this episode taken from the BBC Radio 4 series, Melvyn Bragg voyages to Tasmania to find out what a sentence of transportation to Van Diemen’s Land really meant to those who survived the journey ‘beyond the seas’. We hear the forgotten voices of people such as Joseph Lingard, a respectable Derbyshire man who was wrongfully convicted of the theft of a door-latch, and explore the destinies of the many thousands of British convicts whose forced labour shaped the first 80 years of the Australian colony.

Shortest book I have ever purchased.

What would have made Voices of the Powerless: A Journey Beyond the Seas better?

My own fault because I didn't read the full bio and didn't realise that this book was only 33 minutes long. A waste of my credit.

What was most disappointing about Melvyn Bragg’s story?

Too short

What didn’t you like about Melvyn Bragg’s performance?

Too short

You didn’t love this book--but did it have any redeeming qualities?

None for me.

Any additional comments?

I have just been to Tasmania and wanted to know more about it's history.
Feel that I was short-changed.
