Publisher's Summary

Since its publication in 1960, William L. Shirer’s monumental study of Hitler’s German empire has been widely acclaimed as the definitive record of the 20th century’s blackest hours. The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich offers an unparalleled and thrillingly told examination of how Adolf Hitler nearly succeeded in conquering the world. With millions of copies in print around the globe, it has attained the status of a vital and enduring classic.

Now, many years after the end of World War II, it may seem incredible that our most valued institutions and way of life were threatened by the menace that Hitler and the Third Reich represented. Shirer’s description of events and the cast of characters who played such pivotal roles in defining the course Europe was to take is unforgettable.

Benefiting from his many years as a reporter, and thus a personal observer of the rise of Nazi Germany, and availing himself of some of the 485 tons of documents from the German Foreign Office, as well as countless other diaries, phone transcriptions, and other written records, meticulously kept at every level by the Germans, Shirer has put together a brutally objective account of how Hitler wrested political control of Germany, and planned and executed his six-year quest to dominate the world, only to see Germany go down in flames.

This is a richly rewarding experience for anyone who wants to come to grips with the mysterious question of how this menace to civilization ever came into being, much less was sustained for as long as it was. The answer, unfortunately, is that most of Germany, for a whole host of reasons, embraced Nazism and the fanaticism that Hitler engendered.

    "Exceptionally important and interesting"

I found this book incredibly interesting and cleared a lot of misconceptions I had with how this whole thing went down. I would highly recommend this book for anyone interested in getting details on what really happened and all the little details on what went wrong

"A history of Nazi Germany using original source documents"

I have been an armchair historian my entire adult life and have never before encountered a more complete and gripping account of Hitler's Germany. This work is profound.

The voice acting is top notch, kind of like a trustworthy newsman of a bygone era.

"A must read for World War Two buffs"
What did you love best about The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich?

One was it's attention detail and tireless work to find the right information. Second was that the author gave it a personal touch by subtly giving his own thoughts and observations. It wasn't just a presentation of facts and documents. He was able to do this because he was there at the time and observed many of the ongoing events in person.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich?

The most moving part was the stories of the Nazi atrocities that took place. I had no doubt that they occurred but wasn't aware of the extent and barbarity of the many of the actions.

What does Grover Gardner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

I have listened to Grover Gardner before in "The Civil War" by Shelby Foote, yes all three editions. So when I saw he narrated this story I knew it would be good. He read it in such a way that I felt he was the author that wrote it.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

If it wasn't 50 plus hours I might have. I listen to books on my commute to work and I always looked forward to listening to this each day. Even though I thought I knew the basics of this time period I certainly learned much more after listening to this.

    Any additional comments?

Anyone seeking to understand Adolph Hitler, the Third Reich and World War II should read this.

    "Must listen"

Great book for any history fan. I wish it had been a must read while in high school as it was enlightening. Glad I listened to it now.

57 hours went really quick. Even though I knew how it ends I still was gripped to hear what was going to happen next.

"Those who do not learn history...."

This is a must read for anyone who wants to live free of the history that put us here. The in-depth understanding from a first person retelling of the rise and fall of Hitler and the third Reich is critical in understanding politics, international relations; social and personal relationships among world powers and how they relate today. This is my third "reading" (first listen)! Shirker is a great essayist on this, a most personal story.

"The best book I have ever listened to but some parts I just could not finish."

This book will pull you into what really happened, it is very hard to put down, I fell asleep to it many times because I could not stop listening to it. I have read it from cover to cover at least 3 times now. This book is how I went to sleep every night when working in North East, Baffin Island and living in a tent for 8 months. If you like real true to life war stories then you must have this book.bi would have given it a 5 star rating but there is a section I just could not finish listening too, you will know it when you hear it as you may also not be able to listen to it as well.

    Ciao,
    Michael McCrea

    "The Level Details..nails it"

Have seen documentaries on TV about Third Reich, but the level of details that are in this book...is simply astonishing, and cannot be covered by none

A definite read for history buffs.
