Publisher's summary

This compelling reference presents the history of ancient Greece - the culture that brought us democracy, the Olympics, Socrates, and Alexander the Great - through gripping stories: the rise and fall of the phenomenal empire, the powerful legacy left by ancient Greece for the modern world, and the new discoveries shedding light on these ancient people who are still so much with us.

Greek art and architecture dominate our cities; modern military strategists still study and employ Hellenic war tactics; Greek poetry, plays, and philosophy are widely read and enjoyed; and science, mathematics, medicine, and astronomy all build on the fundamentals of early Greek thinking.

Gain fascinating insights into Greek island living, ancient social networking, and the extreme priority Greeks placed on athletic competition. Learn of spectacular discoveries such as buried palaces, the Uluburun Shipwreck, and the earliest writing ever found in Europe. A stunning treasure, this uniquely comprehensive and accessible history of ancient Greece is perfect for anyone interested in the origins of our modern world.

History Comes Alive

What a wonderful book about the history and legacy of Greece. Originally I thought I’d fill in some very wide gaps in my knowledge of ancient history but after a time I found myself drawn in by the stories and the narrator’s wonderful telling of them. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wishes to know more about how the ancient past continues to influence our present culture.

Entertaining but not consistent

I had a hard time following the story as different aspects had different timelines. The information was interesting and substantive though.

Great for teachers and students

Great narrator. Wide range of topics that can be springboards to projects or homework assignments. Gave me a lot of lesson ideas. Keep this one credit free for all the teachers out there. If there are others in this series of ancient cultures I’d love to hear it.

Entertaining and informative.

Both the writing and the narration make for a very easy listen. This book is very informative without being stuffy in its presentation.

Good book.

Chapter titles are needed in the table of contents . Chapter numbers or a chime is needed to announce each chapter. Brief chapter descriptions in a PDF would also be helpful

Is it possible Nat Geo is Woke?

The story telling and writing was good and the narrator had a easy to listen to reading voice; however, it seemed that any chance the author got, she took a stab at men in a very opinionated manner. In other words, going beyond reporting to cast a harsh hand down on a single gender historically. I didn’t find this useful or appropriate, nor is it accurate if you take historical aspects into context. It’s not good when woke politics makes it way into the history books. It just makes for war. Well, I guess the author is acting out her own Greek comedy? Lol
