Publisher's summary

Before General MacArthur could fulfill his stirring promise of "I shall return" and retake the Philippines from Japanese control, a remarkable rescue mission would have to take place. Captured American soldiers, emaciated and ill from brutal mistreatment, were still being held at the notorious Cabanatuan prison camp. A small band of Army Rangers set out on a daring rescue effort: to penetrate thirty miles into Japanese-controlled territory, storm the camp, and escape with the POWs, carrying them if necessary.

Breuer recounts in searing, meticulous detail the full story of this thrilling true-life adventure and inspiring testament to American heroism and grit.

Critic reviews

"An exciting narrative presented by a first-rate storyteller." (Publishers Weekly)
"The book's great virtue is that it allows a number of the rapidly diminishing band of survivors of the whole experience to have their say." (Booklist)

Great story. I only ding the narration

Easy to follow and context is good. I only ding the narrator because he reads the story to happily. His upbeat voice and speed makes the story and some quotes appear humorous when they are not.

The story of true honor and courage

This is a true story of honor and courage, of those that laid everything on the altar of sacrifice for the freedom of our children and our children’s children.

amazing history

One should feel lucky to not have to live that horror. One should also embrace the sacrifice to make this a world of hope and honor

good listening

Great story! the only thing I didn't like about it was that it went off on tangents a lot as to the history of the Philippines during the war. so on and so forth instead of sticking to the story. but other than that it was a great story

The Other Side Of "I Shall Return"

This is an amazing story. I particularly enjoyed the parts about the Filipino Resistance to the occupation and their efforts to help the POW's at great cost and personal risk. Heroism abounds...

Absolutely incredible

I have no words that can convey a proper review of this amazing event. my grandfather was one of the 6th Rangers and was my inspiration to become a Ranger myself. He had told this story to me in a manner that nade seem like an easy walk on a trail with a few POWs. This presentation put the in a completely different light.

Unforgettable History lesson!!!

This was a perfectly written, excellent account of the occupation of the Country by the Japanese, the capture of American soldiers and their Filipino and other allies. It explains the horrific ordeal the prisoners went through on the Batan Death March and the following imprisonment. The tale ends with McAuthor’s return and liberation of the prison camp. Well worth the read or listen on audible!!!

Against All Odds 6th Ranger Bn To Rescue

What a story! Never ceases to amaze me about the horrendous cruelty perpetrated by the Japanese against POWs. Truly inhumane and reprehensible behavior. Also equally amazing are the efforts of the underground networks both in Pacific and Europe. The use of a "Club" catering to only Japanese by the woman posing as Lithuanian is truly heroic. Her efforts were heroic for the two years of operation and she survived some 37 days of torture without divulging anything. Her release was a Good send. The Rangers in this rescue mission I hope we're all decorated for their efforts.

Wow!! Very powerful!!!

Please read this book!!! This is a must read!!! It took me two days to get through this book and that's because I had school and evidently had to sleep.. I had no idea about such horrors in the Pacific and the sacrifice and courage that the Alamo Scouts, ranger 6th and guerrilla Philippino fighters exhibited in rescuing the POW's Cabanatuan is something stellar. Gripping story and a MUST read!!!
