Publisher's Summary

"There wasn’t a meeting when someone didn’t mention Black Hawk Down."
—A senior Obama Administration official, as quoted in The New York Times, on May 2, 2011

From Mark Bowden, internationally best-selling and acclaimed author of Black Hawk Down and the preeminent chronicler of the actions of our military and special forces writing today, comes an intensely gripping account of the hunt for and elimination of Osama bin Laden. With unprecedented access to key sources and his great gift for storytelling, Bowden takes us inside the rooms where decisions were made and on the ground where the action unfolded. The story focuses on Bin Laden, who maintained a stream of despairing correspondence in hiding in the year before his death, and on President Obama, perceived by many as an anti-war candidate, whose evolving views and enormous responsibilities have turned him into one of the most determined warriors to ever inhabit the White House.

Bowden's book is an unrivaled account of the most high-profile special-forces operation ever to have been undertaken, and a pause-resistant narrative of how the man behind 9/11 was finally brought to justice.

    "Great story about JSOC"

Good background on one of the most important operations of our century and the men of JSOC that pulled it off.

"Another good book from Mark Bowden."

While I didn't enjoy it as much as Guests of the Ayatollah and Black Hawk Down, Mark Bowdens The Finish is another well written and descriptive account of a passionate event in American history. A bit more partisan than his others books, he does make an attempt to remain centered and neutral and just present the facts but he does slip into personal bias against President Bush while glaring faults of Clinton are mentioned without additional commentary.

The reader was not overly dramatic which was welcomed. His professional demeanor and amount of inflection were perfectly suited for this story.

    "Not the best"

The difference between this book and other books written about the Osama bin Laden raid is that this gives the perspective of the White House and not the people who actually did the raid. The book does not really get going until chapter 4 so I would suggest that you start with chapter 4. You would not miss anything by reading the first three chapters. If you really hate Obama then I would suggest just avoiding this book altogether. Because it is really written from his perspective.

"great book! A little biased in favor of Obama"

Great details of the event before during and after. the author is clearly biased in favor of President Obama, but otherwise a very good detailed account of this historic event.

    "The inside story!"

Mark Bowden is by far my favorite contemporary author! This book contains many interesting facts that I would never have expected to learn. This book is one of his best! The subject matter is obviously captivating but there is a so much more than the description of the mission. This book actually made me reconsider my view of president Obama. I never thought that would happen!

"Too long, not enough on spec ops."

The story was three times too long for the content. The narration was too slow, even on 1.25x speed. It was surprisingly political in parts. It covered the special operations team too sparingly.

    "A great story...nicely told"

Well worth the time. Riveting in parts that overcome the sluggishness of the praising of President Obama and a not quite objective characterization of President Bush. I almost bailed during the early parts of what I saw as an over emphasis of President Obama's role which recurred in parts. I feel that this account excessively minimized the efforts of President Bush. But I left with a better understanding of the dynamics that President Obama balanced and his leadership in foreign policy. I learned. I appreciate. well done. I wish the reader used a little less inflection in certain parts. A good "read."

"Author's political views are a real distraction"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Removal of Mr Bowden's apparent (to me) political biases.

What could Mark Bowden have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

Y'all can mark me down as 'former' fan of Mr Bowden (e.g., 'Blackhawk Down' and 'Guests of the Ayatollah'). While his hagiograhical portrayal of President Barack H Obama pushed the envelope a bit of what would be should have been considered to be a dispassionate recounting of the tale ... his gratuitous cheap shots at President George W Bush simply went beyond the pale.

    "Do not BUY......."

You should only purchase this book, if you are looking for a rah, rah cheerleading of President Obama's hand in the killing of UBL, that and a typical liberal's bashing of 43. The only item the author left out was how 44 kicked in the door and took out UBL himself.
