Publisher's Summary

Perfect for fans of the musical Come From Away!

When 38 jetliners bound for the United States were forced to land at Gander International Airport in Canada by the closing of U.S. airspace on September 11, the population of this small town on Newfoundland Island swelled from 10,300 to nearly 17,000. The citizens of Gander met the stranded passengers with an overwhelming display of friendship and goodwill. As the passengers stepped from the airplanes, exhausted, hungry and distraught after being held on board for nearly 24 hours while security checked all of the baggage, they were greeted with a feast prepared by the townspeople. Local bus drivers who had been on strike came off the picket lines to transport the passengers to the various shelters set up in local schools and churches. Linens and toiletries were bought and donated. A middle school provided showers, as well as access to computers, email, and televisions, allowing the passengers to stay in touch with family and follow the news.

    "A wonderful narrative."

I found this book after I had seen the Broadway show, Come From Away. The Broadway production was so moving that I wanted to know more about the story. This book told me more and then I thought I could find out and I loved it. The people that took all the passengers in sounded like the most wonderful people in the world to me. I feel if I had been in their shoes I would've pitched in the same and been happy to do it. 9/11 was it horrible time in the history of the USA. I think everyone who is alive then remembers what they were doing when it happened, just as we do when President Kennedy was assassinated. I recommend this book to anyone and it is one of the best nonfiction books I've read in years. In the Broadway show they do give you a little bit more what happened on the 10th anniversary of 9/11. Get to Newfoundland is the proud owner of steel from the World Trade Center, they are the only town outside the USA to have such a memorial.

"Just the story I needed in these divisive times."

This was a powerful and touching book. I am not usually a fan of non-fiction, but could not stop listening.

    "Amazing"

This book is a very good reminder of the good still left in the world in the mist of dark times. I made me cry in some parts. It reminded me of the historic day of 9/11 and the emotions is had build inside me as I watch things play out live on TV. We as the world are a community and we often for get it.

    "Wonderful story about wonderful people"

A wonderful story about a people who opened their homes, wallets, and hearts to perfect strangers. Touches on the heartbreak of 9/11 but also on the people who did everything they could, in every way, to help those in need. Great listen!!

    "Absolutely delightful."

Every Audible subscriber should listen to this book. The warm hearted people of the province of Newfoundland did a remarkable job representing Canada to the world on that dreadful day. Their outpouring of generosity lasted for over a week to all the passengers who were stranded in the little community. This book is filled with one lovely story after another.
