    "Tip and Ty!"

    With the discouragement of the 2016 political season, it's refreshing to realize that it was nothing new. The 1840 campaign of William Henry Harrison found substance seriously missing from the Whig Campaign, replaced by rallies, parades, songs and fireworks. The Democrats candidate was pictured as a candidate of the rich, and personally as effeminate. And it worked! With property qualifications largely eliminated by this time, it was the "unwashed masses" who selected the president. The campaign established the idea that style can triumph over substance.

    "Presidential Campaigns Don't Change..."

    Good historical book. I enjoyed it. It made me realize that much of the process hasn't changed. It is worth the read if you want presidential history of the time and/or campaigns of the time.

    "More timely than the author knew"

    Interesting tale of the famous 1840 campaign for President. Written for the general reader, but full of insights into the origins of the modern political campaign. Mudslinging, lying, character assassination, and empty-headed avoidance of serious issues is not new in American politics. It was hard to read this without reflecting on the recent campaign and the fact that in spite of the rise of public education and the triumph of science and rational thought that our blessed democracy has not advanced beyond the 1840s in its vulnerability to hoopla, chicanery, and demagoguery. But like 1840, we will survive.
