Publisher's Summary

Paul Revere's midnight ride looms as an almost mythical event in American history - yet it has been largely ignored by scholars and left to patriotic writers and debunkers. In Paul Revere's Ride, David Hackett Fischer fashions an exciting narrative that offers deep insight into the outbreak of revolution and the emergence of the American republic. Beginning in the years before the eruption of war, Fischer illuminates the figure of Paul Revere, a man far more complex than the simple artisan and messenger of tradition. When the alarm riders took to the streets, they did not cry, "The British are coming", for most of them still believed they were British. Within a day many began to think differently. For George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and Thomas Paine, the news of Lexington was their revolutionary Rubicon.

Paul Revere's Ride returns Paul Revere to center stage in these critical events, capturing both the drama and the underlying developments in a triumphant return to narrative history at its finest.

    "A bit drawn out..."

First let me remind you that "history is in fact something that never happened, written by someone who wasn't there." Next take into consideration the fact that Paul Revere's Ride is about 2% of this book, and the history surrounding that event, and those leading up to it are the happenings long before anything could be recorded with the use of a smart phone. We're learning about events that unfolded well over 200 years ago, and from sources that (over the years) have been deemed questionable at best. All this being considered, I still only give the book 3 stars.

The actual ride, and the events leading up to it are interesting to a degree, but there were so many side stories and secondary characters it became difficult to remain interested. There are several pages/chapters about the battles which are all very interesting but it seemed like it took a lifetime to get there.

The narrator does an excellent job (trying) to keep the story interesting with his constant voice inflection and even pitch throughout. I wish the story had the same tone.

If I could sum it up, I'd boil this book down to the 1-2 chapters before and after the ride, and the conclusion which "Debunks" the histories that have been altered over time to the detriment of Paul Revere, and the founding Patriots of this country. Go ahead and add this title to your queue, you might see it a different way.
