Publisher's Summary

This is a new reading of the thrilling account of one of the most astonishing feats of exploration and human courage ever recorded.

In August of 1914, the British ship Endurance set sail for the South Atlantic. In October 1915, still half a continent away from its intended base, the ship was trapped, then crushed in the ice. For five months, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his men, drifting on ice packs, were castaways in one of the most savage regions of the world.

Lansing describes how the men survived a 1,000-mile voyage in an open boat across the stormiest ocean on the globe and an overland trek through forbidding glaciers and mountains. The book recounts a harrowing adventure, but ultimately it is the nobility of these men and their indefatigable will that shines through.

    "Unusual Genre for me"

This book was recommended from a reading challenge to explore a new genre. I thoroughly enjoyed it. But it is not enough to say that. The story is powerful and timeless. It is nerve-wracking and inspiring. It brings you to the brink of despair and rescues you. But mostly it reminds you of the incredible endurance (pun intended) of the human spirit. Highly recommend, especially for teenagers. Many life lessons to be had in this story.

    "Riveting"

The last book that had me this engrossed and on the edge of my seat was The Martian, but this one is a true story, based on diaries kept during the expedition and interviews with surviving members. The prose brings the story to life with detail and emotion and the narrator captures the excitement without becoming melodramatic.

    Any additional comments?

Lansing has woven together a brilliant tale based upon extensive research and interviews with the survivors. This has to be the most amazing tale of hardship and survival ever told. Lansing does not spare us the details of the day to day discomfort of the men, wet, hungry, poorly sheltered and always in danger of demise. The chapters chronicaling Shackleton's 800+ mile voyage in a 22 foot open boat in the worst seas on earth are amazing as a stand-alone story themselves, but the endured so much more. It is simply mind bending what these gentlemen achieved. A must read.

    "Best book on audible"

This is the most fascinating story I have ever heard. If you want to be caught up in a true story that makes your own problems seem trivial, this is the one. These rough men are an inspiration to say the least.

so well read that I now have the voices of those characters stuck in my head. It is am incredible journey that can't be felt in a two paragraph summary on Wikipedia, and ten hour book still can't compare to the 20+ month stretch that team endured. This has been very satisfying reading.
