Publisher's Summary

Author of the best-seller FDR, Jean Edward Smith is a master of the presidential biography. Setting his sights on Dwight D. Eisenhower, Smith delivers a rich account of Eisenhower’s life using previously untapped primary sources. From the military service in WWII that launched his career to the shrewd political decisions that kept America out of wars with the Soviet Union and China, Smith reveals a man who never faltered in his dedication to serving America, whether in times of war or peace.

What the Critics Say

“Always engrossing . . . Smith describes a man who commanded the largest coalition army in history without grandiloquent posturing . . . leaving office more popular than any successor. . . . Smith portrays a genuinely admirable Eisenhower: smart, congenial, unpretentious, and no ideologue. Despite competing biographies from Ambrose, Perret, and D’Este, this is the best.” (Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“Dwight Eisenhower, who was more cunning than he allowed his adversaries to know, understood the advantage of being underestimated. Jean Edward Smith refutes this durable misunderstanding. Smith, America’s greatest living biographer, demonstrates why, now more than ever, Americans should like Ike.” (George F. Will)

“Jean Smith, indubitably America’s most distinguished biographer, has now produced the classic life of Dwight Eisenhower…Here he comes alive on every page—the beneficiary of the exhausting fresh research this handsomely written book is based upon. When the General died, Mamie, his lifelong wife, allowed that she never fully knew her famous husband. No reader of Smith’s work will render the same complaint.” (Henry F. Graff, Professor Emeritus of History, Columbia University)

    "Disappointing"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

There are little biographies that are just an accumulation of anecdotes and then there are serious biographies. This is a serious biography, and unfortunately, the worst I have read.

In military endeavors things often go wrong and the author was very quick to say it was Eisenhower's fault. That's okay. The top guy can get the blame. But when things went right, the author frequently said Ike was just lucky. Sorry, that's not fair.

In the early pages of the book, long before Ike was President the author spoke about what wonderful social change came from Eisenhower's Supreme Court appointments. Conservatives and moderates might not agree. Coming so early in the book it seems like this was the author's bias...or worse yet, the author's activism.

Once the biography reached Ike's presidency, Smith's strong left-wing feelings were much to prevalent. He referred to conservatives in the Republican Party as "crack-pots" and as "the calcified wing" of the party. Smith's prejudice was so strong that when I finished I was not sure how much I could believe of what I had just read.

    Too bad.

    "Insightful and inspiring"
If you could sum up Eisenhower in War and Peace in three words, what would they be?

Many, if not all, of the current geopolitical threats, concerns, and interest of the United States were defined during Eisenhower's lifetime. This book is an insightful and human account of Gen. Eisenhower's career and legacy.
I would strongly recommend this book for anyone interested in mid-century history and leadership.
As well, the author does a fine job creating a portrait of his subject as a hero, while acknowledging his human frailties.

Have you listened to any of Paul Hecht’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

The narrator is quite good. Subtle changes in accent add a little drama, without going over the top.

    "GREAT BIOGRAPHY"

I give the work an A-. I was disappointed by little mentioned concerning the feud with Truman, and 1960 with Nixon v. JFK. Still, a great work!

"The right man at the right time"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes. It is an excellent portrait of a great man with all his foibles. The author is clear about the errors he made, his unkindness and smallness to a few, and the gifts he had. Eisenhower had great good fortune but he frequently made his own.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Eisenhower in War and Peace?

When he was ill with a serious stomach disorder he was not able to concentrate and John Foster Dulles got his way and lost our friendship with Egypt and compounded an already difficult Middle East situation.

Which character – as performed by Paul Hecht – was your favorite?

    Kay Summersby

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    No. Too much to handle.

    Any additional comments?

The more I learn the more I love.

"An impressive life story very well told."

Eisenhower is the first president I remember as a child. I never thought of him as particularly memorable - until I read this book. It's a great story about an unremarkable boy who, through luck, native intelligence, perseverance and moral character, grows up to become not only the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces during WWII, but afterwards, one of the more capable presidents our country has had the good fortune and common sense to elect.

"excellent view into a piece of American history"

I never realized that Eisenhower did so much, not only during the war but after as President. This is definitely a must read for executives of large organizations.

"The Right Man at the Right Time"

An excellent and well written history of a President who was vastly underrated and to whom we owe much. This book explains in the historical context of Ike's life, the subtle ways in which he dramatically influenced both the war years and the postwar world. In retrospect we we damn lucky to have had him as President for the awkward decade of the 1950's.
very well written and very well read!

"Excellent biography of an amazing life."

This book does a wonderful job describing the events of Ike's life, as well as helping you understand who he was as a person. Throughout the book, I felt like I was truly getting to know the man, and by the end, I felt like I had lost a friend.
