Publisher's summary

Stephen E. Ambrose draws from hundreds of interviews with US Army veterans and the brave Allied soldiers who fought alongside them to create this exceptional account of the day that shaped the twentieth century. D-Day is above all the epic story of men at the most demanding moment of their existence, when the horrors, complexities and triumphs of life are laid bare and courage and heroism come to the fore.

Critic reviews

" D-Day is mostly about people, but goes even further in evoking the horror, the endurance, the daring and indeed, the human failings at Omaha Beach... Outstanding." ( The New York Times Book Review)
"Packed with drama and information, never losing sight of the horrors of combat, Ambrose's D-Day is the best book yet on what many historians consider to be the most important day of the twentieth century." ( San Francisco Chronicle)

Awesome! Awesome! Awesome! Book

If you like World War II then you will most likely really enjoy this book. I read another book by this author and he’s a very good writer and historian. The narrator does very good as well and I highly recommend this book to anybody who wants to know more about World War II.

A great book about D-Day

I wanted to know about Operation Overlord and the specifics of what happened on D-Day. I got it from this book. There are so many perceptions about D-Day out there so I wanted to learn about it myself and this book and others helped me learn. The overall scope of the operation is mind-boggling. The amount of the resources Operation Overlord consumed is staggering. The entire book is basically all about the actual day of the invasion. Another excellent book by Steven Ambrose. The narration is excellent. Fine job.

we should never forget what these men did.

This is great history as told by the men that were there and responsible for defeating Hitler and his hatred.

Best D Day book I’ve listened to.

Ambrose doesn’t dispense dry facts, but tells the reader illustrated facts from the personal experience of the men who were there. It makes the history interesting and alive. Jesse Boggs is the perfect narrator, he captures the somber tone needed for a subject of this magnitude.

D Day

Well written story. At times overwhelmingly tragic. And the little personal stories are at times very funny. Well researched and well read.

I recall having D Day veterans gave commencement speeches upon the competition of our US Army Basic training...On June 6th 1984. We were all in awe. This book puts the honor of being in the same room with those soldiers in perspective.

One more... Met a D Day Canadian soldier walking his dog in Los Angeles. He made it through the first few days of the invasion then had a nasty mine end his time as a soldier. He said he had retired from the phone company in the US - even though he was color blind... It seems his coworkers went out of their way to assist & honor his WW2 contributions. Nice sections on various countries’ military participation in this great (audio) book..

Outstanding story telling

The story of D-day is well known to everyone. Yet, this was a gripping story. The Allies were not perfect. They made many mistakes but many did extraordinary things. Well worth your time and money.

Wow - freedom is not free!!

Stephen Ambrose does an amazing and thorough job of taking the reader to D-Day, describing the sights sounds and smells not to mention the horrors of June 6, 1944. Thank you Mr. Ambrose & that you to the Allied Forces!

Amazing

I felt like I was there I felt like I totally can understand the issues that they were dealing with in the planning it in on the ground and I really loved how accents were utilized in a non-weird way to really read the story across more

Never was so much owed by so many to so few. ~Winston Churchill

Overall, this audiobook is a great telling of the novel by Stephen Ambrose. The story covered by the book encompasses more about D-Day than most contemporary history sources. While it does bog down at times and feel dull, it overall is a worthy listen.
