Publisher's Summary

Over the course of this gripping narrative, Dave Cullen approaches his subjects with unrivaled care and insight. What emerges are shattering portraits of the killers, the victims, and the community that suffered one of the greatest - and most socially and historically important - shooting tragedies of the 20th century.

Ten years in the works, Columbine is a masterpiece of reportage, from the acclaimed journalist who followed the massacre from day one and reconstructed the psychological journey of two teenage boys who became killers.

What the Critics Say

"Dave Cullen is the Dante of this high school hell. I came away from it thinking of Jack Nicholson hollering 'You want the truth? You can't handle the truth!' Read this quietly powerful account of Columbine and find out if you can." (Ron Rosenbaum, author of Explaining Hitler)

"Great if you want to delve deeper into shootings"

After the Pulse nightclub tragedy in Orlando the topic of mass shootings was on my mind and I went back to the first one I could remember, Columbine. Why would someone do that? What happens to the families of the victims? What happens to the survivors later in life? How do the parents of the shooters deal with the fallout? I came into 'Columbine' with those questions and I think Dave Cullen did a great job at trying to tackle each and every one of them. Of course you can never know really how a person, able to commit such acts of violence, must feel - but I think 'Columbine' has given me some perspective I didn't have before. The scenes where Cullen recalls the events of the day are extremely captivating, and the analysis, while jumping around and at times long-winded, is very thorough. Possibly he could have shaved a bit off this book but overall it was a great, well researched read! I recommend it.

    "Chilling, Powerful, Memorable"

This powerful reading was dark, deep, and sounded more like a horror movie than a book. It was well researched and documented, and the author perfectly balanced factual insight with narrative additions. I will never forget the horror written on these pages, but may this material provide solace and insight to inquiring minds. God bless

"Good, thorough, facts but the reader embellishments are inappropriate."

I actually like the reader but in this case, from the onset, is disturbing and inappropriate. Sadly this could have been excellent.

    "The definitive tome on Columbine."

It's amazing to think that we're approaching 20 years since the Columbine massacre. Columbine was a moment in history that everyone alive during that time will always remember with clarity. Curiously, many details we remember are inaccurate and were misinformed at the time, but have been crystallized in the collective consciousness.

Dave Cullen does a masterful job of walking the reader through the tragedy with the mind and tactical skill of a seasoned reporter, uncovering inaccuracies and myths one at a time. He doesn't allow his personal opinions, experiences (he was a local reporter), or judgments to cloud his retelling of the facts of this story. Cullen does a wonderful service to both history and readers by simultaneously exhibiting exhaustive research of every character, timeline component, and scientific fact of the story while somehow keeping a consistent focus on the pacing attached to the story. Additionally, he even gets style points for the format of the story (two tracks - one focused on the massacre and aftermath, one on Klebold and Harris in the lead up to the massacre).

Again, without question the definitive tome on Columbine. A title that will never be challenged.

    "Narrating felt off"

I felt like the narrator just wasn't right for me. Hearing him try to impersonate high schoolers' voices, inflections and mannerisms felt so out of place and very awkward.
There were also places where his voice didn't seem to match the tone of what was being said.

    "highly inaccurate and embellished"

It's a good fan fiction if anything. I liked it until survivors said it wasn't as true as claimed. Eric and Dylan WERE bullied and Eric did not date frequently as this book claims.

    "Believe the hype"

I enjoy true crime and while reading reviews of the excellent WHILE THE CITY SLEPT, I saw multiple references to a book that seemed to be regarded as the apex of true crime artistry. That book was COLUMBINE. It is everything people said it would be - thorough, sensitive, and told in a fragmented yet completely logical structure. Whether you know nothing, a little bit, or a lot about this tragedy you should listen to this book. If you like well crafted narratives, read this book. The narration is excellent and the writing is simply fantastic.
