Publisher's Summary

Easy Company, 506th Airborne Division, U.S. Army, was as good a rifle company as any in the world. From their rigorous training in Georgia in 1942 to D-Day and victory, Ambrose tells the story of this remarkable company, which kept getting the tough assignments. Easy Company was responsible for everything from parachuting into France early D-Day morning to the capture of Hitler's Eagle's Nest at Berchtesgaden.

Band of Brothers is the account of the men of this remarkable unit who fought, went hungry, froze, and died, a company that took 150 percent casualities and considered the Purple Heart a badge of office. Drawing on hours of interviews with survivors as well as the soldiers' journals and letters, Stephen Ambrose tell the stories - often in the men's own words - of these American hereoes.

What the Critics Say

"A first-class explanation of what crack infantry troops are like....Addicts of military history will relish its finely detailed account.....Stephen Ambrose's thorough research and clear organization have produced a highly readable account of the heroic service of this "band of brothers" he so unstintedly admires." (San Francisco Chronicle)

"As a member of just such a unit...I am impressed by how well Mr. Ambrose has captured the true essence of a combat rifle company." (The New York Times Book Review)

"A valuable and fascinating record....In these pages, the reader can vicariously walk with the men of E Company, suffer and laugh with them." (The Times-Picayune)

Great book, I listened to it on long drives for work and would catch myself sitting in the truck still listening 30 minutes after arriving at the destination.

    "Pronouncing Words"
What made the experience of listening to Band of Brothers the most enjoyable?

I've read this book and many spin offs written by members of Easy Company, watched the miniseries dozens of times. The story is unforgettable and never gets old. There's always new pieces of information that I hadn't noticed before that peak my interest and lead me down research rabbit holes for hours. Great to have on in the background while doing chores or while out for a walk.

What other book might you compare Band of Brothers to and why?

Beyond Band of Brothers: The War Memoirs of Major Dick Winters

Brothers in Battle, Best of Friends

Easy Company Soldier: The Legendary Battles of a Sergeant from World War II's "Band of Brothers"

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Several times, repeatedly.

    Any additional comments?

The narrator was alright. He could have done with a refresher on pronouncing names and locations before recording this. He goes way overboard in trying to pronounce some French and Dutch locations to the point that you cannot understand what he's saying since he's gurgling so much saliva in the back of his throat. Without fail, any name or location that ends with an "e", he throws a "nyə" sound onto it. Examples: Bastogne (he pronounces it "Bas-ton-yə"), Guarnere ("Gwan-yə-ree"), Toye (Toy-ə). It's a minor complaint, but it digs at you after a while.

"disappointing performance of an incredible story "

I've been fascinated with this story for many years. The men named in these pages are unquestionably all heros of our country. For the reader to not take the time to learn the correct pronunciation of the characters and settings is an enormous disappointment.

    "A Must Read"

Worth everyone's time to read/listen to. Tough to hear what these men (and everyone in WWII) went through, and heartbreaking to hear of those who gave their lives, but may our veterans sacrifices never be forgotten.

Stephen E Ambrose truly did our country a great service bringing these stories together. Tim Jerome is one of the better narrators I've listened to.

    "Amazing book."

I loved this book and I admire, so much, the courage and strength of these great men and the many others that fought to stop the tyranny. of Hitlers Germany. Extremely well written and I loved the narration. I highly recommend this audio book to anyone and everyone. 5 Stars!

    "Incredible Story of Real Heroes"

The tv miniseries has long been a favorite of mine so I wanted to check out the book. I was not disappointed! It is an amazing story well told! It has enough character focus and anecdotal information to keep interest throughout.

"Loved the series you'll love the book."

I loved his audiobook the only problem I had ( which may be trivial to others ) was the narrators pronunciation of names i.e Guarnere etc but other than that an incredible tale which expands on each part of the series and adds more detail.

I'd recommend this to anyone interested in WW2, certain Army Batallions or how one company made a ' Band of Brothers ' from all walks of life. Time to listen to it again......

"Slightly disappointed. But not a terrible experience."

I am probably word perfect on the series.

The book feels less of a 'story' more an account. I didn't feel the book was very descriptive compared to the depth of character you have in the series.

The book paints a general picture but i was expecting something with a lot more detail.

It was down to my personal expectations rather than the book in all fairness.

"Excellent, apart from the English accents"

I found this book to be excellent in content. It contains quite a bit more detail than the HBO series. What was disappointing, though, was the English accents. The narrator puts on a hammy, camp voice like Leslie Phillips, which sounds utterly farcical at best, and, at worst, disrespectful to the brave souls depicted. A real shame as the reading is otherwise great.

    "Real heroes "

Incredible story from start to finish. I loved the TV series and have watched it many times, this is the 1st time I have listened to the book and loved it. The bond between these men is unbreakable and the faith and trust in the man beside them in the worst conditions a person can imagine is unbelievable.

Legend or hero is used too much these days about people but these men are exactly that.

    "They were not alone!"

Despite the incredible courage and endurance of the Airborne troops, it may have been gracious for the author to at least give credit to the other troops without whom the Airborne would not have been able to sustain their progress. The narrator should have at least taken the time to learn the correct pronunciation of place names (particularly Dutch towns) and his accent used for 'English' soldiers was ludicrous! Making each one sound as if they were a product of Eton! Infuriatingly, the author refers to 'the English' soldiers/troops rather than 'British'! A common mistake made by Americans!
Overall the story was interesting despite a rather condescending attitude to all non-Airborne combatants.
