Editorial reviews

Narrator Noah Michael Levine's expressive performance shades in different layers of emotion as he narrates the true story of Jewish prisoner Dr. Miklos Nyiszli, who was spared death and chosen by Dr. Josef Mengele himself to assist in the Nazi doctor's terrible experiments. Levine sensitively evokes both the horror and desire for survival that permeates Dr. Nyiszli's stories of serving as Mengele's personal research pathologist and as the physician to the Sonderkommando, the Jewish prisoners who worked in the crematoriums and were routinely executed every four months. Listeners will find themselves moved by Dr. Nyiszli's moral agony over his role as Mengele's assistant and his ambition to stay alive in order to reveal the truth about Auschwitz.

Publisher's summary

Auschwitz was one of the first books to bring the full horror of the Nazi death camps to the American public; this is, as the New York Review of Books said, "the best brief account of the Auschwitz experience available."

When the Nazis invaded Hungary in 1944, they sent virtually the entire Jewish population to Auschwitz. A Jew and a medical doctor, the prisoner Dr. Miklos Nyiszli was spared death for a grimmer fate: to perform "scientific research" on his fellow inmates under the supervision of the man who became known as the infamous "Angel of Death" - Dr. Josef Mengele. Nyiszli was named Mengele's personal research pathologist. In that capacity he also served as physician to the Sonderkommando, the Jewish prisoners who worked exclusively in the crematoriums and were routinely executed after four months. Miraculously, Nyiszli survived to give this horrifying and sobering account.

Just wow.

I have searched for books that tell about how things were inside the camps, and I have searched for books about the experiments, and the gas chambers.

While most books skirt around those topics - this one hits the full horror head on. First rate account

Every WW-II fan must read this book.

What did you love best about Auschwitz?

I learned details i hadn't read in any of the dozens of World War II related books. Bad things, but details that should not be forgotten. To forget such things is to forget the people who suffered, and that's not right.

Which character – as performed by Noah Michael Levine – was your favorite?

I think of the victims more than any single character. They ultimately suffered the most, and paid the highest price.

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

Damned if you do; damned if you don't.

Any additional comments?

Some reviews stated the narration is poor. I disagree completely. The story itself is so absorbing, nitpicking over the narration seems petty.

I regret waiting to get this book. The author tells his story in way that is on its own level. The fact he sees his wife and daughter in the end, after what they all went through, is incredible.

Shook, just shook.

Very rarely will I immerse myself and get completely lost in an audible book, but this book is a must read. The narrator Noah Michael Levine, did an OUTSTANDING job, it literally felt as if he was a person of that awful past, recounting his horrible and heroic story.
It never ceases to amaze me, the level of cruelty in this world. I can’t imagine what it must have been like, but this book...somehow...makes it seem as if you are there.

Wow

This book will haunt my dreams for many years to come. It’s not an easy listen it’s not an easy subject but it is so so important and this doctor narrated this experience so well. He really knows so many questions in my mind that I had never thought of before in regards to the holocaust. I was absolutely captivated by this book I feel like it is so important for the world to hear his story. This was excellent writing and an excellent narrative horrifying subject.

An extraordinary story of one man just doing whatever it takes to survive HELL!

This is an amazing book. Keep in mind it is a book that has been translated into English so I noticed when the wrong word was used. One example that really stood out. The author was describing the condition that I recognized as hemophilia but called it anemia. Obviously, not a big deal. This did not ruin the book. I would recommend this to anyone looking for a holocaust survivor story.

Must read

There’s no other book like this about the Holocaust that I’ve read. Gives a greater and deeper understanding of what really went on in the concentration and extermination camps.

Miklos Nyiszli _The Butcher Of Auschwitz

If you could sum up Auschwitz in three words, what would they be?

An Active Participant.

What do you think your next listen will be?

Bible

What about Noah Michael Levine’s performance did you like?

As good as you would expect, for such a hellish book, but a lack of empathy.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, but not because it was good.

Any additional comments?

Have you ever robbed a grave? This is a book that might be a best seller in the "Skinhead World", but if you have never experienced the underbelly of the Devil himself, stay away from this book, as it will make you ill, and if it does not, then you might need help.

GRIPPING, TERRIFYING, AND REAL

Wow, what a horrifying account of the atrocities of Auschwitz and the concentration/extermination camps. He was, in a way, one of the lucky ones there. He had food, clothing, a bed, and was not involved in the hard labor (for the most part).
He was one of the special "Sonderkommandos," who had much better living conditions but were exposed to the nastiest side of live in the camps - dealing with the bodies. After 4 months the hundreds of sonderkommandos were routinely exterminated, as they were deemed to know "too much."

This book also gave us a little more insight into Dr. Mengele, who is both terrifying and fascinating, but by all accounts a monster. It's amazing all of the atrocities by the Nazis largely went undiscovered until the worst of it had passed.

EVERYONE these days calling conservatives NAZIS should READ THIS BOOK and others on the subject before making such ridiculous accusations.

AMAZING AUDIOBOOK!

Pronunciation

It was such a great book. I borrowed a copy from a friend but could never find time to read it so resorted to audiobook. Being fluent in German my only con to the reader of this story was the lack of even amateur pronunciation of the German language, I was very disappointed with that. Overall the book was great, but the narration wasn't great
