Publisher's Summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of Rome, then pay attention....

Rome started as a kingdom, thrived as a republic, conquered vast territories when it was an empire, and became the Holy City during the Middle Ages. Even today, Rome continues to intrigue us with its rich history, architecture, art, literature, religion, laws, and language. The abundant archaeological findings of Rome and its surrounding are but a fragment of what the city once was. Nevertheless, it is enough to engage us, tickle our imagination, and satisfy our thirst for knowledge.

The importance of Rome cannot be argued. Its history is not the history of Italy or its people. Rome is a part of the foundation of Europe, just as Athens is. Without it, the world as we know it today wouldn’t exist.

In History of Rome: A Captivating Guide to Roman History, Starting from the Legend of Romulus and Remus Through the Roman Republic, Byzantium, Medieval Period, and Renaissance to Modern History, you will discover topics such as:

  • The founding of Rome: myth and reality
  • The Kingdom of Rome
  • The Roman Republic
  • Social wars and the end of the Roman Republic
  • Pax Romana
  • The third and early fourth centuries
  • The fall of the West; the East thrives
  • Rome in the Middle Ages
  • The Renaissance
  • Modern history of Rome
  • Much, much more

A Very Good Listen!

I love Greco-Roman history, so when I could get a chance to listen to a history book on it, I leapt at the chance. This was indeed one that I could not turn off. Just like the ebook, I was able to go through this in one go. Very fascinating! Definitely a must-listen!

British reader

The reader does pronounce words different than I, so I'm glad I got the book as well. it does compliment the other European history books by Captivating History.

The level of detail is really impressive

I continue to be amazed at the level of detail the Captivating History books contain. I'm a history buff and read a lot of history books and watch a lot of history documentaries, The information I heard in this book not only corresponds or corroborates facts I've learned from other sources but includes new details I haven't heard or seen anyway else.

Secularism at it's best

Overall I feel like this book was a good encapsulation of Roman history as viewed from the proverbial "ten thousand feet up". However, the book falls flat in making sense in some areas, mainly with the use of unclear antecedents to identify which person the authors are actually speaking of. Especially in the middle of the book when emperors are coming and going within Rome. However, the book is worse because of its clear disdain for Catholicism and it's treating of Catholic Tradition as "legend" or "myth". The book also details some dark Catholic history that has almost nothing to do with Roman, or even Italian history for that matter. Why even include that unless you are clearly taking a jab at Christians? The book seemed insulting to me for most of it and because of that, was terribly hard to actually finish. I will not be reading another from Captivating History.

Captivating retelling of the great Roman Empire!

Amazing retelling of one of the greatest empires to exist on earth. A true neutral retelling, narrated expertly, this had me hooked from start to finish.

EXCELLENT!

Experiencing this comprehensive historical and factual reading has exposed the meager tidbits which our educational system calls history of the Western World. I now have a more complete understanding of our roots.
