"Into his fateful heap of days the soul of man is cast.”
Only a few months from his 50th year, Nikolas is feeling a distinct wobble in his formidable certainties. Aleksey Primakov appears to have become irrelevant. All he needs, therefore, is to be dragged into an adventure with Devon's answer to the three musketeers. How many times can he tell Ben and his moronic friends that a mutilated body buried on Dartmoor has nothing to do with them? But not only does this desecration slowly become their business, it cuts to the heart of the life they have created together. It's just as well, perhaps, that generals never do actually retire....

Gary Furlong does another amazing job at bringing it all to life.
One of my favorites in a fantastic series

The author adresses some very serious moral and social issues in this story, but also leaves plenty of room for humor, action, and plot twists. The layered plot lines continue to build with each volume. Although this book has a great resolution, I hope for more. I also look forward to Gary Furlong's continued narration wich enhances the story with his excellent performance.
Great story. Great narration.

Poor Nik is having an identity crisis I guess you'd say, due to his upcoming birthday. Ben finds this funny (maybe because of the type of person he knows Nik is/has been) and never let's an opportunity to remind him how "old" Nik is go by. I've listened to the books so many times, I know when the digs are coming. "Dozy ol' cat" is a favorite of mine and the visit to the museum is particularly fun.
Gary Furlong is absolutely outstanding in this series. His ability to transition from character to character so smoothly is just amazing. He doesn't just 'read' the book, he acts it out and superbly. There are not enough stars available to reflect my opinion of his performance here.
My favorite Series

Each book has a good pace and builds on events from the previous book as time progresses through the 14 years Ben & Nickolas are together, I was taken on a roller coaster ride of the best parts of an action/adventure movie, ran the full gamut of emotions and while the character development was subtle, it was well written and builds a relationship with a solid foundation that can withstand any force thrown its way.
Despite certain elements of some of the books not being to my liking, I was completely emersed in the stories, entertained from beginning to end and will definitely look for more from this author in the future.
📖 Story comment: His Fateful Heap of Days: I liked the contemplation of Nik & Ben getting older, it’s generally not a story line that is explored and was well written, I also like that there is little swearing in this series.
🎧 Narrator comment: I enjoyed Gary Furlong's narration, he suits the characters, has good cadence, inflections and intonations and it's easy to distinguish the characters from each other. Overall an enjoyable performance and he bought the characters of the book to life.

Note to self ... the lack of lube drove me nuts ... 9 books and only one instance of "gun oil" to ease the way?

I've left least one review for john wiltshire's books in kindle , but I have not done so here in audible. And that's remiss of me because this narrator is very special. I always know who who was speaking. He brings gravitas without edging into the maudlin. But he makes the humor vivid as well. The man's comic timing Is unbelievable to me especially when he's got several characters holding a Quick and often silly Conversation. Somehow he seems to make Everything work exactly as it was intended.
This goes for the entire series.
