Publisher's summary

Lady Annys MacQueen has no other choice. The deception that enabled her to keep her lands safe is on the verge of being revealed by a cruel kinsman. To shield her young son from the sword and her people from devastation, she must turn to the one man she could never forget.

He lives for duty and honor. So the only way that Sir Harcourt Murray could repay the laird who saved his life was to agree to father a child with Sir MacQueen's wife, Lady Annys. Now the passion he still feels for the lovely, strong-willed widow is as all consuming and perilous as securing her lands. But to convince her that his love is real means confronting her most wrenching fears and putting everything they treasure most at stake.

Contains mature themes.

Highland Guard

This is the 20th book in the Murray family series. Lady Annys needs help and the only one to help her is Sir Harcourt Murray. She hasn't seen him in over five years. Her husband has been murdered and her son needs a champion. Her in-laws want her keep. And will go to war to get it. Secrets from the past come to light. And not all in the village are wanting Annys's son to live. When he arrives he doesn't come alone. He brings five knights who's reputation at fighting is just as good as his. But when the war starts what will happen when it seems that all is lost? Not telling. I loved the last couple of chapters the best. Great ending. The narration was entertaining.

A fun ride

I enjoyed this take on highland romance. It has all the things you love and brings a new angle to the party that you would not expect to work so well but it does.

Rooberrta is Not For the Pot

I am a devoted fan of narrator Ms Dawe. Her talents are wonderful but none better than her Scotts brogue and her interpretation of young children. This series showcases her many talents. My fave books 10,5,6 for the wit and humor.
I am listening out of order based on the publishers summery and the amount of humor author has used in the story. Hence my title. Roberta and Robin save the day and add much humor to this tale. One of the reviewers filled in the story, and I must say author stuck to the outline but had a bit too much repetitive dialogue. Yes, author had our younger cousins and bother in our mix of merry men which always adds to the fun. The mystery was clear and cleverly developed, but author must work a bit harder on less repetitive dialogue for future books as she has a plethora of cousins and brothers to weave a clever tale.
I do use the 1.25x speed for mysteries, but with this author, many times I use the regular speed for the second time I re listen to the tale.
Were my comments of help?

Another great Scottish Medieval!

Hannah Howell has a formula to her books and they work. This book is #20 in the Murray clan series. It can be read as a stand alone, but much of the subtle sub context will be lost if the reader has not read the the other books in the series.
This story is one of the more outrageous, while at the same time relies less on the mystical ‘gifts’ of the Murrays.
The heroine is a widow with a child, who’s husband was first gelded, then killed by the neighboring Laird in order to steal her keep and lands.
The Hero is the father of the heir—-by the request of the husband. He of course leaves the keep and goes to work with brother Brett.
Now he’s back because the husband ( David) is dead and the neighbor is attacking them.
So... much romance in rekindled.
Betrayers are routed.
Battles are fought.
And then... there is a surprise guest appearance!
I always crack up laughing because Ms Howell seems to enjoy having her couples get forcibly married, just when the H was getting ready to expose all his ‘unmanly’ feelings of love. This leads to much emotional confusion of course, which always must get wrapped up in the next to last chapter. Like I said, it’s a formula, but why mess with success? It’s a fun read.
