Publisher's summary

Crime, high-stakes poker, and a hidden treasure. Will Shelby survive her most challenging adventure yet?

Mind reader Shelby Nichols is determined to take charge of her own destiny, but even the best laid plans are no match for the high-stakes crime involving a mob boss and his enemies. A simple visit with a nosy reporter leads her to a story with a strong link to her past that she is unable to resist.

Uncle Joey is depending on her unique talents to win a poker tournament, and a simple request from Detective Harris may end up costing her life. Now, Shelby is in deep trouble all over again. This time, her only way out is with a lot of help - but will it be enough?

I always look forward to new books in this series!

Colleen Helm is one of those authors who consistently writes books you can count on. Always a solid story with everything you look for in a cozy mystery. This is the 15th book in the series and although it can be listened to as a standalone I would suggest listening to the series in order. There are growing relationships and character development so important to the series that would be missed if you were to pick up a book in the middle of the series. If you’re not going to go back and listen to all, at the very least pick up book one (CARROTS.) or you will be totally lost.
Once again Shelby is involved in multiple cases, each one could be deadly if not for her abilities and Ramos. Even with that she still has a close call, or should I say another close call that brings her even closer to the edge then she’s been before, only this time it’s Cocoa to her rescue.
Wendy Tremont King as always does a fabulous job narrating. She is the voice of Shelby and I hope this never changes.
This book has my HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Best series

This is one of the best series. I’m always on the look out for the next book. It’s funny and suspenseful. I like how it’s not so “Crauch Novelly” there isn’t any sex scenes which is ok. Narration is great also. The relationship Shelby has with all of them is so loving and makes you feel good. It
defiantly a feel good book. Ramos and Shelby’s relationship is one of the best. You can tell they really love each other but they never cross that line because they do. When they mess with each other is awesome also.

Loved it

I always enjoy discovering what mischief Shelby Nichols can cause in all her adventures. I can’t wait to find out what lies ahead for Shelby. Wendy Tremont King, as always, gave a stellar performance as she brought it all together and gave it life.

Oh Shelby, the trouble you get yourself into.

This book started a little alow but ended up being my favorite in the series. Such a fun story with lots of action and even more warm fuzzies! I'm really loving the growth in the characters. Although i cant believe how crappy Dimples is in this one. The narrator is great. I find myself talking to my dog who happens to ne named Shelby and sounding like Uncle Joey....lol. Cant wait for the next book in the series!

Loved every minute!

My top thoughts:
I’m always eager to pick up the next Shelby book – they always promise a quick, fun read with my favorite characters. And you can be sure Shelby will get into some trouble, it’s like her specialty. This book was no exception!

What I liked/didn’t like:
When I started this book, I immediately picked up that we were going to have some overlapping story line with Angel Falls, the first book of a spin off series I’ve also read and loved – so I was excited to get the story of the $10 Million Vegas Poker Tournament from Shelby’s perspective. Thanks to Shelby’s mind reading abilities, not to mention that there were plenty of times where she wasn’t with the characters from Angel Falls, that part of the story was just as exciting as before – maybe more so because I knew where things were headed and I enjoyed the anticipation of seeing it from Shelby’s point of view.

But the truly exciting part of this book was the part that seemed at first glance the most tame. Shelby ends up going gold prospecting as an investor along with Uncle Joey, Ramos, and Billie – along with the group they are backing. Through a series of really poor decisions and clear inexperience, the mining project ends in disaster for Shelby … like I said she has a special ability, not just for reading minds, but for getting into trouble.

As always, this was a super fast read for me and enjoyed seeing all the characters I’ve grown to love. Shelby’s kids are really growing up and their new dog Cocoa is a real treat as well. This book wasn’t as intense as some of the previous books, but I enjoyed it just the same.

Narrator thoughts:
As always, I listened to the wonderful narration by Wendy Tremont King. I can’t believe we’re 15 books in – she truly is the voice of Shelby and the gang for me and I would be very disappointed if the narrator had to change at this point. I always listen at 2x speed very comfortably, her narration handles the increased speed really well. I can’t wait for another Shelby adventure!

WOW! What a ride! Almost a "two plus" for one book

Colleen has done it again. At first I was a little disappointed that it was like a remake of other poker books - boy was I in for a surprise. The poker sequence was riveting, and when that was finished you find a whole other story about prospecting for a goldmine. There was also a little blurb thrown in about a murder involving illegal cremations to hide the facts of murder by gun runners. Who could ask for more? There were some old characters who put in appearances and a ton of insinuations about coming storylines. I'm already for book 16.

Brilliant!

High Stakes Crime is absolutely packed with excitement, mystery, and intrigue! The storyline is brilliant as always and I can’t get enough of the wonderful characters that Wendy Tremont King brings to life perfectly. (I even hear her character voices when I read the books).

Raising the stakes

Colleen Helme has definitely raised the stakes even higher with this instalment in the Shelby Nichols series. I enjoyed the previous books in the series but somehow she has managed to take it to another level and you will struggle to define the book, think mind reading chaos including Dr Dolitt!e fun, a mob boss and his motorbike riding enforcer, a murder mystery to solve, combined with an Indiana Jones adventure or treasure hunt and rounded up with a Las Vegas poker game where cheating is the name of the game, with so much going on I was hooked until the very last word. But the story isn't the only thing this series has going for it because it is packed full of some amazing characters, it was also great to see a cross over character from another series. I just can't get enough of this series and am eagerly awaiting the next book, to see what is in store for the characters that we all love.
Traveling to Vegas to win a high stakes poker game, where you know what cards everybody is holding, should have been fun for Shelby but a trip to a press conference has her thinking of finding buried treasure in an old mine her grandfather tried to find. This isn't good when the host of the game doesn't want you to win and tries underhanded tricks to make sure she doesn't, a friend is also in trouble in she wins. Can Shelby concentrate long enough to win the jackpot for Uncle Joey? Especially as she wants to spend the money looking for the goldmine but can she trust professor who made the discovery. At the same time the police need her mind reading help in solving a murder in a mortuary. It's all in a day's work for Shelby Nichols.
I really like the narrator. I can't imagine anybody else as the voice for Shelby and the gang because Wendy does such a good job.
