This Book Is For You If You Are Still Carrying the Weight of Service-Related Trauma

This is not just a memoir. It's an apology letter for the damage done, a love letter to the woman who stayed, and a map for anyone trying to find their way home.

Hiding in Plain Sight is not another war story or celebration of strength-it's a brutally honest account of how thirty years of service as a veteran and first responder slowly dismantled one man's identity, marriage, and sense of self.

Doug White opens up about post-traumatic stress injuries, emotional collapse, and the fallout of a life spent serving others while ignoring his own breaking points. But this isn't a story about trauma-it's a story about growth, honesty, and the long road back to being whole.

If you're a spouse, partner, or loved one of someone who serves, this is the book you give them when you can't find the words. And if you are the one still carrying the weight-this is the book that tells you:

You're not alone. You're not broken beyond repair. And it's not too late to become the person your family still believes in.

Hiding in Plain Sight is not just a story-it's a bridge. One that connects silence to understanding, suffering to growth, and warriors to the ones who never stopped loving them.

Perfect for:

  • Veterans and first responders in transition
  • Military and responder spouses looking to support their partner
  • Listeners seeking real, raw stories of trauma and redemption
  • Those ready to grow through what they've been through

This isn't just Doug's story-it's the story of every home strained by service, and the message that growth, love, and restoration are still possible.

Give it to the one who's still hiding, or listen to it to understand the one you love.

powerful and impactful!

Doug is a good man and was a hard charger. In a service where one would think everyone would be hard chargers and sharp individuals, one quickly finds out that is not the case. There is a broad spectrum of people in Law Enforcement, but Doug represented the hard edge (to his effectiveness and his detriment). The book is accurate and speaks from where his feet took him. There is a tax to be paid when in Law Enforcement/Military , to have Doug speak to this is on par with having a deep talk with your older brother.

Highly recommend!

There are hundreds of different paths in Law Enforcement and experiences may vary, but Doug’s message of seeking help is from the heart. The different strategies is an individual journey and must be tailored to the individual, he addresses that here as well.

Most of those in Doug’s shoes are still holding back their feelings and vulnerability. This book is paving the way to help veterans and first responders feel ok with opening up to help others on their journey while starting to heal their own broken roads!

It’s ok to be vulnerable

Doug White is as courageous as they come; facing his experiences that tore him down, and sharing how he processed them to build himself back up. This isn’t just a narrative. it’s a field guide to show other first responders that they are not alone in their humanity, and clinicians who work with them what is happening in the brain and underbelly of first responders to be able to serve them better.

True Heroism by way of courageous and vulnerable storytelling

One of the book’s strongest elements is its authenticity. White writes with a sincerity that feels unfiltered yet skillfully composed. His ability to weave together anecdote, insight, and introspection makes the book resonate on multiple levels. Whether discussing moments of vulnerability or triumph, he does so with a voice that is both grounded and compelling.

Genuine

Doug tells this story with truth, humility and utter raw emotion. Knowing him for over 50 years and seeing the transformation from young man, military man, police man, husband and father I was shocked to find out the trauma he was hiding. I’m in awe of the man he has become on the other side with the loving motivation from his wife. There is always light at the end of the tunnel. Doug reminds us to be watchful and step in to that light. A must read for first responders and their family.

Shock and Awe

It’s no small feat for someone from the military or first responder world to admit defeat. We’re not built that way. We’re supposed to be the ones who stand tall in the face of adversity and shoulder a piece of the world’s darkness so others don’t have to. But everyone has a breaking point—and most of us only admit it when it’s already too late.

Doug does exactly that in this book. He lays it all out—the guilt, the shame, the aftermath. This isn’t a story of heroics; it’s a story of sacrifice. A man who put service above all else until it nearly destroyed him. It’s raw, honest, and deeply human. More than anything, it’s about finding meaning in the endless tragedy our first responders face, and how that silent suffering doesn’t just hit the uniform—it hits the whole family.
