Publisher's summary

“I cannot and will not recant!…Here I stand.” This authoritative and inspiring story paints a vivid portrait of the crusader who spearheaded the Reformation. Considered one of the most readable biographies of Martin Luther, this volume looks at the German religious reformer and his influence on Western civilization.

Martin Luther entered a monastery as a youth and as a man shattered the structure of the medieval church, speaking out against the corrupt religious practices of the time. His demand that the authority for doctrine and practice be scriptures, rather than popes or councils, echoed around the world and ignited the great Reformation. Accused of heresy and threatened with excommunication and death, Luther maintained his bold stand and refused to recant. In his crusade to eliminate religious abuses, he did more than any other man to establish the Protestant faith.

With sound historical scholarship and penetrating insight, Roland Bainton examines Luther’s widespread influence. He re-creates the spiritual setting of the sixteenth century, showing Luther’s place within it and influence upon it. Here I Stand dramatically brings to life Martin Luther, the great reformer.

Roland H. Bainton (1894–1984), a specialist in Reformation history, was for forty-two years Titus Street Professor of Ecclesiastical History at Yale, and he continued writing well into his twenty years of retirement. He wore his scholarship lightly and had a lively, readable style. His most popular book, Here I Stand, sold more than a million copies.

A great story of an amazing life!

Where does Here I Stand rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This isn't the best audiobook but certainly not the worst. The narrator speaks a little too quickly.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Here I Stand?

The areas about Luther's family life as a husband and father.

Have you listened to any of Tom Weiner’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Never did before.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No, in a few settings of a couple hours each.

Any additional comments?

The faster speech may have some listeners replaying certain parts, especially if they aren't familiar with all the rulers and prominent people from the 1500's. Overall very informative though and recommended highly!

Good

I’ve read several books on the life and history of Martin Luther. This is a very good one. Unlike some books on Luther, this one does not skip difficult topics in his life that are difficult to reconcile. If you are a student of history, this is one man you want to know.

Sincerely, Pastor Paul Trimble.

Kept me interested, challenged & enlightened

The only way I would have been able to read this book is on an audio version! The sheer length makes it an intimidating read, but I was hardly able to stop listening! The language in the book is a bit challenging to understand, which I think lends it even better to an audio version! I felt as if I was hearing Luther himself speak! There were so many tidbits that challenged my own thinking of Faith & religion and helped me see our history in new light. Highly 100% recommend this book!

I better understand Martin Luther now.

Brilliant, yet also a man of his times and full of superstition. He walks a fine line between genius and madness, and left his indelible mark on European christianity.
