Publisher's summary

An unsolved crime pits a desperate woman against a relentless killer in New York Times bestselling author Mary Burton’s heart-stopping novel of psychological suspense…

Fourteen years ago, Kaitlin Roe was the lone witness to the abduction of her cousin Gina. She still remembers that lonely Virginia road. She can still see the masked stranger and hear Gina’s screams. And she still suffers the guilt of running away in fear and resents being interrogated as a suspect in the immediate aftermath. Now Kaitlin has only one way to assuage the pain and nightmares—by interviewing everyone associated with the unsolved crime for a podcast that could finally bring closure to a case gone cold.

But when a woman Kaitlin questions is later found stabbed to death, she fears that she’s drawn a killer out of hiding. It’s Detective John Adler’s fear that the murders have only just begun. Now his job is to keep Kaitlin safe.

As a bond between Kaitlin and Adler builds, the past closes in just as fast—and it’s darker than Kaitlin remembers. Soon, her wish will come true. She’s going to find out exactly what happened to Gina. Someone has been dying to tell her.

Excellent

I enjoyed a love story progress. It was really neat the way a woman finally got brave enough to find out what really happened to her cousin.

Narrator’s Tone is Annoying

The story was good, but predictable. The narration was annoying though. When there was no dialogue, she adopt sarcastic cadence and inflection to her words.

Great Listen, keeps you guessing

It’s hard to review a book without giving anything away. Sorta 2 stories tied together here and while one made sense the other “ending” of the other storyline didn’t make sense at all. Why would a person be that obsessed with someone they never met soooo I think the author let us down with that one. This book was just the right length and didn’t keep dragging on and on.

“Her Last Word” was good!

This review is not a perfect 5 stars but pretty close..and only for the reason that the chapter titles, the “podcast review” titles, and length of the book...too long & at times confusing.

I wanted this book to be a stand alone novel, which is could be, but if you didn’t read the last one, you wouldn’t have known the detectives...so those were only my negative.

Overall I had NO CLUE who the killer was, which is great for any psychological thriller! I really love all of Mary Burton’s novels and this was no exception, except for those “little” things...she writes so any reader will drive into head first and stay there until they’re done.

I love Brittany Pressley narration..the only thing I will say is..she has a natural Texas southern accent and everyone has that sound. This book is taking place in VA & the accent is completely different than TX...but that’s it..little thing. She’s a natural!

Definitely recommended over age of 17 😁

Why does it always have to end in romance?

Great story, well written and very intriguing. Why , oh, why does the cop and the victim have to fall for each other? It would have been so much better if they’d both walked away!

Just Okay

I wanted to love it. I didn't. I tried harder. I couldn't. It felt very forced. I wish there had been more twist to the "who dun it" it just seemed really slopped together and so very forced. The romance was so eye rollingly forced. Just not what I have come to expect from Mary Burton and her storytelling. I enjoyed the narration.

entertaining

First time author for me. Mary Burton, the author, has written lots of books I realized after I'd purchased this one. I"m not sure how I misses/avoided her all this time but something about this book caught my eye. The genre is called romantic thriller but it was mostly thriller and the romance only playing a small part.

The book was fast paced from the start and easily kept your attention and kept you going. There seemed to be part police procedural in the elements of solving a crime but the fiction kept you focused on the story.

I did thoroughly enjoy the listen and I'll have to browse audilbe to find a good Mary Burton encore.
