Publisher's summary

When the world of Armageddon is attacked by orks, the Black Templars Space Marine Chapter are amongst those sent to liberate it. Chaplain Grimaldus and a band of Black Templars are charged with the defence of Hive Helsreach from the xenos invaders in one of the many battle zones.

Hero of Helsreach

I loved the book immensely. I felt Grimaldus and his brothers love for each other, even though they are not entirety human at least thats what they say. I felt they were human in the end, especially when they start to pass.

Reclusiarch...

I have never really enjoyed Black Templars lore wise. However, this book is one of the best 40k novels in existence, in my honest opinion. Painting pictures of; differences between Astartes Chapters, differences of not just the physical but mental aspects of Astartes and humans, and the tumultuous relationships between Imperial factions such as the Mechanicus. Wonderfully written and phenomenally orated.

Until the end

Great book it may not have made me shed tears but it truly made me a fan of Warhammer 40k being the first book I’ve heard it truly was a journey until the end until the very end.

The best 40k book. Period.

Outside of the Horus Heresy books, this is the best Warhammer 40k related book I have ever read. Simply a masterpiece.

Overall good.

Great overall story, but with a rushed ending. A good listen for Black Templars fans.

Among the best of 40k novels

This book is not just an excellent portrayal of a slice of time in Warhammer: 40k, it's a great read even for those relatively unfamiliar with the universe. Bowden does a a great job capturing a lot of human stories, combined with a well balanced plot full of highs and lows for every character. Keeble is the perfect narrator, especially for a writer in the style of Bowden, and does amazing job making every character more or less recognizable by by voice alone. The stereotypical brooding space marine is turned on its head; every one is very human, with guardsmen (it's impossible to not love Andre), citizens, generals, tanks, fighters, titans, even a bit of space action making this a very complete picture of the defense of a single city, the limited scope making the Armageddon war much more relatable.
