Publisher's Summary

“Sam was brushing her hair when the girl in the mirror put down the hairbrush, smiled, and said, "We don't love you anymore." So began the Twitter Audio project, with a dazzling first line penned by New York Times best-selling author Neil Gaiman. What followed was an epic tale of imaginary lands, magical objects, haunting melodies, plucky sidekicks, menacing villains, and much more.

From mystical blue roses to enchanted mirrors to pesky puppets, this classic fable was born from the collective creativity of more than one hundred contributors via the social network Twitter.com in a groundbreaking literary experiment. Together, virtual strangers crafted a rollicking story of a young girl’s journey with love, forgiveness, and acceptance.

Failed experiment

I utterly love Neil Gaimsn, so I'm going to pretend this never happened. Even with the incomparable Kayherine Kellgren as narrator, this is almost unlistenable. It's a hot mess of loose ends and inconsistencies desperately patched together with cliches and compromise. The impression left is that Gaiman's Twitter followers came up with ideas that were either stupid or obvious, and didn't listen to each other, and it was left to Gaiman to try and force it all together. At least, I sincerely hope so.

overly twee voice actor

I found the performance of this piece unbearable. It was read as if for small children.

Loved it!

I loved this story! This was a neat little fairytale retold at least that’s what it felt like to me. It has shades of Alice in Wonderland in fact there is a cute little epilogue I enjoyed too. I don’t want to say too much since it is a short story I don’t want to give anything away to detract you from enjoying this one!

I must say that I am a Neil Gaiman fan and a Katherine Kellgren fan but I think even if I wasn’t I would have enjoyed this story!

This audiobook is only an hour and forty-five minutes long and well worth the $1.95 audible is charging.

Wimsical... sort of.

This story kept me guessing, and was fun to listen to. I loved the lilting voice of the performer, and Neil Gaiman has been my favorite author for years. It was fun to see how the story changed each time something new came up, but it didn't read like a role-playing game the way it could have. I would love to see the book in a picture-book format, if it isn't already.

frustrating in the extreme

I especially enjoy listening to Audible books before bed, using the sleep timer. I also especially like Neil Gaiman's work. This one I tried listening to half a dozen times and have now given up because the reading goes radically up and down in volume. I couldn't relax listening to it. If I turned the volume down there were lines which were too quiet to hear. If I made it loud enough to hear the quiet bits the voice would flare up jarringly. I also found Kellgren's voice sharp.

Perhaps I'll find time to listen in the daytime. For now it's a disappointment.

Pure Zeitverschwendung

Langweilig, sinnlos, reine Zeitverschwendung. Diese Story auch nur anzubieten oder zu erstellen war vollkommen sinnlos. Langweilig und sinnlos, mehr kann ich kaum sagen

Parts knees and paltry

I LOVE Neil Gaiman, but this is a sophomoric exercise that is just painful to listen to. Would have been a
Good college assignment but not for public consumption. The twitterverse is NOT Terry Pratchett and it’s a bad marriage.

Gaiman never fails to deliver.

As usual. Mr. Gaiman delivers a darkly whimsical dish of literary deliciousness.

An interesting and unique twist on what life is like through the looking glass.

The only thing more enjoyable than the story itself was Ms. Kellgren's spirited narration.

it started very good, but...

The narrator was very good, but the storry was missing some key elememts. The hero is passive, things rather just happen to her.

Hearts, Keys, and puppetry ✌🏻

Yet another very awesome book by my now, very favourite author.
He's from my home town which makes my appraisal etc of what I've listened too (a motorcycle accident on March 1st 1991 courtesy of a drunk driver hitting me and my motorcycle late night with 2 paralysed arms and partial neck paralysis at 19. I so very much wanted to write and more importantly, read books but my disability and the lack of using my hand(S) to turn pages was virtually impossible. As technology moves on, I was introduced to Audible.
I can now get to listen (read) books again!!! My world has opened up again with a Titan sized thank you very much to Audible and Neil Gaiman!!! By the way, if anyone's reading my appraisal, I'm typing with a capacitive stick in my mouth.
I have to say that apart from American Gods, this was almost magical, enthralling a read. I've now thankfully downloaded via this app nearly all of Neil Gaiman's books available in Audible - THIS is a MUST listen/read. Neil Gaiman NEVER FAILS to whisk you and your imagination away to fantastical places and people etc. Please do yourself a very big favour and submerse yourself into this book ~ absolutely fantastic and awesome!!!!
Very best wishes to you all. Vaughan ✌🏻

Disjointed story and truly awful narration. Couldn't cope with more than 20. minutes of it no matter how much I tried.

would have listened if not for repetitiveness

I could see myself enjoying the story if the sample didn't have the use of one word 5..? 6? times within 2 minutes.
Shame I would have liked to listen and was intrigued.
But darkness was said enough in that short span of time I knew it would drive me mad before the end of the intro, let alone finishing the book.
Who checked this and how did they not notice!? And say something to the author!?

Simple and light - suitable for a young audience

Would you try another book written by Neil Gaiman and The Twitterverse or narrated by Katherine Kellgren?

Definitely - enjoyed the narration style and while the story was more suitable to a young audience it was well written and an easy listen

If you’ve listened to books by Neil Gaiman and The Twitterverse before, how does this one compare?

Average . Enjoyed other books by Neil Gaiman much better.

Which character – as performed by Katherine Kellgren – was your favourite?

The Badger

Was Hearts, Keys, and Puppetry worth the listening time?

Yes. Wasn't the best and most stimulating thing I've listened to but was pleasant enough.

Any additional comments?

Probably a good book for female Tweens
