Deadly storms have ravaged Mina’s homeland for generations. Floods sweep away entire villages, while bloody wars are waged over the few remaining resources. Her people believe the Sea God, once their protector, now curses them with death and despair. Story
So many stories begin the same way: With a prophecy. A chosen one. And the inevitable quest to slay a villain, save the kingdom, and fulfill a grand destiny. But this is not that kind of story. It does begin with a prophecy: A child will rise to defeat the Eternal Khan, a cruel immortal god-king, and save the kingdom. And that prophecy did anoint a hero, Jian, raised since birth in luxury and splendor, and celebrated before he has won a single battle.

I almost didn’t make the last 24 mins of this book. The author has all of pieces to make this a great story . It should be a Great story . The premise, the world building, the supporting characters and yet the strong female lead however ruins all of this amazing weave. I am looking for redemption in the 3rd book. This woman is ridiculous- absolutely ridiculous to follow. Her need to reject those who love her, continues into emotional lethargy & ambivalence while inviting avoidable generational drama with immortal combatants is only trumped by her own self definition as a “selfish & shallow creature” ? I don’t get it?

Great book!
Love, love, love! The author is a magical writer that transports the reader into the story. I will be looking for more of her writings.

An enchanting fairytale made new
I loved every second of this book. The performance was amazing. I love everything she narrates. I’m so glad I read this duology. This book was so emotional and I was invested in all the characters. And I loved the ending!

A Must Read
Honestly one of the best books I have “read” in a while. The story sucks you in from the beginning! I couldn’t stop listening until it was finished. So many twist and turns with beautiful character development.

Inconsistent characterization stick with first book
The main character is very inconsistent with the first book. The traits she is described to have in the first book that drew us to her are not present in this book (witty, elegant yet simple, and true to herself, stand up for what is right, and selfless). The love interests seem like Ken dolls with no feelings or emotions outside of their undying love for the main character. The other characters seem very flat. Very disappointing! If I could do it over again, I would end it on a good note with the ending of the first book.

DNF. so boring
Just so boring, repetitive, and the characters are all so dull and forgettable. Did not finish.
