Publisher's summary

How to build muscle and burn fat … without morphing into a big, bulky bodybuilder.

Have you failed to get in great shape after weeks and months of going to the gym?

Do you lack confidence in the gym, feel too weak, or feel self-conscious about the current shape of your body?

Are you put off lifting weights because you don’t want to end up with the bulky, overgrown bodybuilder look?

No need to worry. This book is all about strength training NOT bodybuilding - and yes there is a difference.

It doesn’t matter if you’re just starting strength training, or have been hitting the gym for a while and are frustrated at not seeing any results. This is the essential guide on how to build muscle, burn fat, and develop a lean, athletic, awesome body … instead of becoming a super-inflated bodybuilder.

I’m Marc McLean, author of the Strength Training 101 book series, and I help people like you become leaner, stronger, more confident versions of themselves. It all begins with lifting weights, pushing yourself hard, and developing a rock solid body and mind.

I have almost two decades worth of experience in weight training and, as an Online personal trainer, I’ve helped numerous men and women push their limits and achieve what they never thought was possible.

Changed the way I will approach Training

Best thing I got from this audiobook was the 3-6-9 concept. definitely changed the way I will approach the gym, but I still belive cardio has more of a place than the author gives credit for. Great book, i definitely recommend!

sage advice

what a wonderful gem this book is. the author breaks down the things I have heard before but now understand and believe are obtainable. his approach makes sense and teaches you how to see and measure results quickly without getting stagnant in your routine which would result in quitting or feeling defeted. I highly recommend this to anyone new to weight training that is just looking to build strength and look better without looking like a body builder or to anyone that's been lifting for awhile and just not getting the results they hoped for. kudos on such a great book and thanks for the sage advice.

I think I would rather read this one

I am not new to the gym and weighlifting scene, but I found it quite hard to follow the descriptions when the narrator told how to perform exercises. I think pictures in a book with text would be fine, but a video would be better. There is included a website to access some additional materials from the author, which is awesome. I enjoyed the book overall, but I would have rather read it instead of listened to it.

Useful, practical and motivating

In contrast to the relatively recent fad of bulking up too much, online personal trainer Marc McLean offers sound advice on how to build a natural-looking body through strength training – one that’s lean and athletic instead of a bulky body-builder’s physique.

Narrator Evan Schmitt is ideal for this audiobook. It’s a manual for the ordinary man or woman and so he sounds like an ordinary person – not some deep-voiced, grunting army sergeant or yelling gym instructor. His voice is clear, inviting and calming, which is precisely what is needed for anyone beginning their fitness journey.

McLean’s book covers a large range of topics which are suitable for both beginners and those with experience. He discusses overcoming fear, focus, preparation and goal setting, and the benefits of keeping a training journal to schedule workouts and keep track of progress. Like many books of this ilk, there’s the mandatory spiel on motivation and diet, and the need to ditch bad habits by finding the right mindset.

McLean goes into great detail about his four key rules to effective strength training, along with information on progressive overload and training frequency. He doesn’t skimp on the basics either, such as warming up, safety first and using proper technique.

Strength Training Not Bodybuilding is a useful, practical and motivating guide to building body and mind.

Great common sense approach to creating a healthy lifestyle!!

If you are looking for a book to help get you on the right track to a healthy lifestyle then you’ve found it! This book will walk you through creating a mindset, goal setting, and a plan that can be followed by anyone! I, like I believe most people, do not want to look like those bodybuilders that grace the cover of those muscle magazines(nothing wrong with that if that’s your thing) but nor do I have the time to try to get there. I just want to live a healthy lifestyle that can be maintained the rest of my life, and feel comfortable enough to take my shirt off at the pool or beach. Marc’s approach is something that can be incorporated into anyone’s busy and hectic lifestyle and it works perfectly for both men and women as my wife has been following his guidelines the last 5 weeks and she has not felt better in recent years. Get the book and follow the guidelines and you won’t regret it!
