Publisher's Summary

The highly anticipated seventh novel in the bestselling DI Nick Dixon Crime Series.

A man has been mutilated and left to drown on the incoming tide, handcuffed in his van. With the murder bearing a striking resemblance to a string of sadistic killings carried out with surgical precision in 1990s gangland Manchester, it can mean only one thing: the killer is back.

Transferred to the Major Investigation Team, DI Nick Dixon is assigned a new partner and sent to Manchester. Meanwhile, the gruesome murders in Somerset continue.

Convinced of a connection with the unsolved gangland killings, and with the odds stacked against him, Dixon takes the ultimate gamble, determined to bring the killer to justice before it's too late.

But is it the same killer? If so, why has he resurfaced now? And how many more must die?

Another excellent DI Nick Dixon suspense mystery!

The publisher's summary provides all of the appropriate background to Heads or Tails which is Book 7 in the Detective Inspector Nick Dixon series by British author Damien Boyd. The novel, like the prior 6 in the series, has lots of action and intense suspense. It is a fast moving mystery with realistic and likable characters (except for the bad guys). Heads of Tails is an outstanding police procedural. Napoleon Ryan narrates very well.

Great book and awesome narration..

I found this to be a little more confusing than the other 6 books in the series but it didn’t lose me completely, which was good. And one reviewer said there were too many characters in this and I have to agree. It could have done with about 10 fewer characters.

BUT, overall it was a great story about a serial killer who stopped killing then years and years later a copycat took his place, with details of the first killer’s victims that were never released to the public. The two killed buy stabbing their victims in the neck and drilling a hole right between their eyes, and there was a reason for that, you’ll have to read the book to find out why they killed that way.

Again, I gotta tell ya’ that I hate when you like a character and the author kills them off. This character wasn’t just in the book for a minute he was in it for most of the book. I was really bummed about that. No warning, no nothing, just BOOM he’s dead.

As always, there was no sex in this, I think a couple of pecks on the cheek between Dixon and Jane, our hero and heroine. And the F-bomb was used 24 times.

As to the narrator: Phenomenal! Napoleon Ryan laughed, cried, whispered, yelled, groaned, everything the book called for. I never get tired of listening to him. And the women sound exactly like women, not like a man trying to do a woman’s voice. He’s incredible.

Feels like a repeat

Did not hold my interest, I didn't finish. I hate to be critical of narrators but have to admit that Napoleon Ryan is not my favorite.

One of the best current British Crime Novelists

I am a big fan of Peter Robinson and I am current on all his books. I hate waiting a year for the next one to come out. I stumbled on Damien Boyd's work about 2 years ago and I think he is fast approaching Peter Robinson's caliber of crime fiction. Now I there are two books in British Crime Fiction I can look forward to every year.
I need also mention that Napoleon Ryan is an excellent narrator and really adds to the enjoyability of the series. Audible 20.

Each book gets better

Really enjoyed this one. I am becoming very fond of the main characters . Starting this book I had forgotten the very particular cadence that the narrator Napoleon Ryan has but once you get used to it it's fine he is also brilliant at regional accents . Looking forward to the next one.

Does not Disappoint

Heads or Tails does not disappoint. The character development and backstories from the previous books clearly emerge and gel nicely into Book 7. Another suspenseful rush. Hard to put down at night, easy to lose sleep over. We root for our hero from beginning to end. I can't wait for Book 8. It's also clear that with all the plot and backstories complete and with Jane's character becoming very prominent, the DI Nixon series can easily become a well watched weekly TV series. Hope that happens. I really think it would have a great US audience as well.

Gave up

I'm sure the story was good but the narrator was awful - every descriptive sentence delivered like some profound, earth-shattering information was being delivered, character voices equally poor, especially falsetto for female characters. First book I've ever given up on.

Disappointed

Having read and enjoyed the previous 6 books I was looking forward to listening to book 7. Unfortunately Napolean Ryan's voice was nothing like Nick Dixon's voice that was in my head! I did not finish listening to the book but I am looking forward to reading it.

Gripping story.

Riveting plot. Well drawn characters. Thought the real Vet should have been more prominent in his copper role. A little bit like a character ‘off’. Performances were repetitive and at times amateur-very obviously disguised as other voices. Narration however was effective.

Couldn’t finish this story

I found the narration apart from a couple of the cockney voices awful to listen to. The main voices were whispery and wishy washy. This is the 2 nd Damien Boyd book I have had the storyline of the first was great but the narration awful I will not try a third
