Publisher's summary

The USA Today best-selling author of the Ten Tiny Breaths and Burying Water series makes her romantic thriller debut with this heartpounding story of a young woman determined to find justice after her best friend's death, a story pulsing with the "intense, hot, emotional" (Colleen Hoover) writing that exhilarates her legions of fans.

Twenty-eight-year-old Maggie Sparkes arrives in New York City to pack up what's left of her best friend's belongings after a suicide that has left everyone stunned. The police have deemed the evidence conclusive: Celine got into bed, downed a bottle of Xanax and a handle of Maker's Mark, and never woke up.

But when Maggie discovers secrets in the childhood lockbox hidden in Celine's apartment, she begins asking questions. Questions about the man Celine fell in love with. The man she never told anyone about, not even Maggie. The man Celine herself claimed would be her ruin.

On the hunt for answers that will force the police to reopen the case, Maggie uncovers more than she bargained for about Celine's private life - and inadvertently puts herself on the radar of a killer who will stop at nothing to keep his crimes undiscovered.

Excellent

This was excellent. I had this in audible format for a while. After reading the synopsis, I just could not get in the mood to listen-read about a best friend dying. I am so sorry I have waited so long to read-listen to this book.

It is so suspenseful and exciting, and so full of twists. Frankly, I wanted her to end up with one (you will understand after listening-reading) of them because I wanted her to be happy. She did end up happy. Listen or read this one ....it is awesomely excellent. Narration was perfection. I like to read and listen. Narration brought the story to life....At times...too much. Highly recommend this one. It is going to be a while before I forget this beautifully written novel.

Great book, I finished it in one day!

I have enjoyed the books that Olivia Song has read. This one was no different. The story was also surprisingly good!

Loved it except for one big thing

For me this was an awesome story. Full of suspense and mystery and just the right amount of steaminess, this had a lot of dimensions and subplots to it that were all related to the main mystery enough to keep me guessing, keep me hooked and wanting to read more.

However.......I really, really did not like the main protagonist (Maggie). She was just very judgmental and sheltered (for someone who had traveled around the world, she was extremely naive and I feel like there's no excuse for it when someone has the means she has), I just got this sense of a holier-than-thou mentality from her. She has some moments of clarity where she starts to see things from Selene's perspective, but it wasn't enough for me. I just got really frustrated with her and it made me not want to keep listening sometimes.

Both narrators were good, the main narrator did a good job with the different voices (both did, but the main narrator had more characters to perform).

Artfully Suspenseful

A mystery-thriller, absolutely...a romance novel, well not really; however, there are elements of a romance within the context of the secrecy and conspiracy behind the 'whodunit' plot. Although, I will say that this author always provides a fascinating plot device mixed in with her romance stories, indulging the reader with some artful suspense (something not revealed that must be uncovered slowly as the story progresses), this book is definitely not a typical K.A. Tucker story line. Yet, the writing was standard issue in regards to this outstanding author...solid, engaging and clever!

With that said and considering that I am probably the quintessential romance reader, I thoroughly enjoyed this book; but I went in not expecting it to be a true romance, thanks to my 'go to' goodreads reviewer, Jessica. All the elements of a great read are there...the characters are well-developed and fascinating, perfect pacing and solid mechanics and as always, K.A. Tucker delivers a thought-provoking and compelling tale!

Suspenseful

A great mystery read and very suspenseful throughout, so many twists and turns that you question who could it be, as soon as you think it's going one way it completely changes. Loved it!!

More plot twist than a M. Night Shyamalan movie

There was almost too much going on. Quite often I will put a timer on a book and fall asleep listening. I had to keep resetting the timer on this one. It was interesting but not memorable. It is not one of those books that stays with you and you want to read again. It is a good way to get through your boring workout or long car ride.

K.A. Tucker's best work to date

I couldn't pry myself away from my headphones with this enthralling story! I've read many of K.A. Tucker's before and this is my favorite to date. I am really hoping we might see a sequel to continue Maggie's story.

Eh...vague spoiler alert.

It started out really good. But just for once I would like to find a book where the killer is revealed in the end but doesn't make an hour-long confession to the person he's then trying to kill. What kind of killer does that? And at the same time let's also find a book that doesn't explain how the near final victim was found until after it is revealed that they are found. I guess with a great beginning I just expected a better ending.
