Publisher's summary

After a failed marriage, Kelly Winters moves to the strange Californian coastal town of Haven to join her younger brother, expecting nothing more than a quiet life, new beginnings, and perhaps a little love. Instead, she enters a world of magic and murder. Not only does she learn she's a witch and has a powerful destiny linked to her long-lost parents, but she soon discovers the quaint town is full of secrets, lies, and an underlying darkness.

As the sun rises and the body of a local scuba instructor is pulled from the ocean, Kelly finds herself drawn into a dangerous murder mystery that will challenge everything she believes about herself, the town, and her family's history.

With the clock ticking and a killer on the loose, Kelly must risk everything in order to stop the darkness from taking hold of another innocent life. Now, if she can just get a handle on these new powers, her brothers antics, her batty aunt Barb, and a hot surfer with eyes for her, things might just work out.

Hot guys, fun antics,a witch and a killer

Haven Witches Mystery, Book 1
By: Emma Watts
Narrated by: Natalie Naudus
This is an audible book I requested and the review is voluntary.
I really enjoyed this book, it was obviously a start to a new series and one I want to continue with. A gal moves in with her rich brother after a failed marriage. She doesn't realize she has the potential to be a witch or have magic. There is a murder in town. The whole town seems to have secrets and is small. It leaves the the upcoming books open for a lot of potential. This was a fun romp with a cute guys, crazy antics, trying to figure out magic, and underneath all that there is the need to find the killer. Good book.
The narrator did a fine job of keeping the book flowing smoothly and voices clear and perfectly performed. Nice job.

A fun, mysterious and magical series!

I absolutely love this book! It grabbed my attention from the beginning and I finished in one sitting. The author and narrator are both new to me and both have been added to my favorites list. The narration is FABULOUS! Natalie Naudus does an excellent job giving each character a unique voice which brought the story to life. Overall, a fun, magical story, very well written and beautifully told. I will definitely follow this series, this author, this narrator! Haven be to all

SO the plot line went semi slowly at first but after a while it starts to speed up to a more enticing level. There was times when I forgot it was a supernatural mystery and just thought it was a mystery, then a plot line would come in and I would go back to that train of thought. Honestly for a while felt like they had written a mystery and were told they needed to spice it up a bit and they changed it to a witchy theme. Not in the worst way.

A Cozy Witchy Murder Mystery

When I first looked at this book, I thought (hoped) it might be different from the plethora of witch sleuths. It wasn’t too far off mark, actually too similar for a lasting impresion.
Level headed Kelly seems to be more air headed, as although she acts like a strong protagonist, more thoughts and questions run through her head than out her mouth.
Her brother’s character could use a new outline. His supposed millionaire status was from YouTube viewership and its advertising/sponsorship perks, yet he offers to buy Kelly a business and he wanted 3% profits, claiming he made his financial success based on investments.
River, his cameraman, is coerced to take Kelly out and Kelly has her G-string in a bunch because she doesn’t wanna be a notch. FFS, enjoy some company and keep your clothes on. Who are you to dissect a near stranger’s life choice?
So character build up was more like this winter’s melting down and shaky like an aftershock.
The mystery was interesting although “police academy” does not fully train one on investigation matters. Research is a crucual key for a solid, riveting book. Clues were nicely, if not chaoticly, trickled; but the murder mystery was not immediate, due to setting up the new surroundings.
I do think the author is capable of more and better, as the series/first book seems to be going in a forward direction than circles.
I thoroughly enjoyed the narrator, and would give the second book a chance if she lands the job.

Good beginning to the series

Any additional comments?

This is a very nice cozy and is a good beginning to the series. This book introduces us to our heroine, Kelly and leads us through her discovery that she is a witch. Not only is she a witch but she is the latest in a long line of witches who are tasked with solving murders in order to keep evil at bay. There is one little obstacle, however. She can use spells as well as technology to suss out the murderer but no one can know witchcraft is involved. This should give us some good moments in future books; seeing how Kelly can use her magic and move the authorities toward resolution without giving up her secret.

This book lays the foundation for the next books in the series by concentrating more on Kelly learning she is a witch and beginning to use her newly found powers and less on the murder itself. My assumption is that later books in the series will devote more time to the mystery at hand than was done in this book. I really liked this book and was more than willing to allow the author time to give me the foundation I will most likely need in future books.

I'm looking forward to listening to the next book in the series.

Natalie Naudus did an excellent job narrating this book. The pace was natural and she was able to separate characters without overly exaggerating deep voices for men and higher voices for women.
